I believe accurately evaluating response methods related to rapidly changing world is one of the best ways public safety agencies, especially law enforcement agencies, can protect and serve the citizens and their communities. This topic was interesting to research as my chosen career path is in crime scene. Even going to a location after the crime has been committed, there will need to be a response method in place for each situation you may encounter.  Knowing why response methods are needed and how law enforcement agencies are preparing for the ever-changing environments has helped me understand the importance of having them planned and implemented.

If you think about it, response methods are used in your daily life also. For instance, you hear on the news that a hurricane is brewing, and the news says it will make landfall close to your location. What do you do? You start planning for this natural disaster. You create an evacuation plan. You would start by making a list of essentials you will need, the routes you would take out of the area and the meeting location for everyone if you happened to get separated. You now have a personal response method in case of a natural disaster, such as a hurricane.

With, law enforcement agencies need to have response tactics in place to navigate each event and respond accordingly, especially all the events that have occurred around the world from 9/11 to the London bus attack to the Las Vegas Massacre. Criminals are becoming smarter with committing crimes, they can cover their tracks better, can leave little to no evidence and can easily evade their capture making police officers jobs more challenging. Now, with new advancements in law enforcement such as real-time crime activity video feeds, predictive policing, crime mapping, improved DNA testing, lie detection, and aerial vehicles, law enforcement can stay ahead of the criminals and their crime attempts.

Law enforcement has come a long way and will continue to evolve every day, bringing new challenges which will necessitate substantial revisions in their response methods. These changes will include changes in political, social, technology, demographics, workforce, shifting values, and community interactions to name a few. For law enforcement to be successful, they will need to build or strengthen their relationships with the community and its residents as these are the people law enforcement needs to protect. Having trust with one another, the individuals in the community and the police officers can work together to combat crime.

In evaluating response methods in law enforcement, all recommendations for refining response methods start with the principle that law enforcement’s mission is to protect and serve. The current circumstance implies that response methods in law enforcement need to be modified and enhanced to keep up with future trends and enhanced crime. During my field research, I was able to conduct two interviews with two different law enforcement officers in two different police agencies. The following are some of the recommendations for Clearwater Police Department and Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office to help ensure each that response methods are improved to accommodate the safety of law enforcement personnel and the citizens of the communities.

Improved response times: With a large volume of calls that come into a police department on any given day, officers need to be prepared for the call, be able to respond quickly, and properly handle the situation completely. This can be accomplished by having more officers on call and each unit broken down by the severity of the calls. Having some officers that handle only calls such as domestic violence and others that would respond to civil disputes.

Reviewing and improving response methods: Utilizing the same response methods daily just because they work will end up being a challenge in the future. Although, it would be vexing for law enforcement agencies to have a response method in place for every situation, I think it is important to have a standard written response method that would be a guideline to an unusual situation allowing the officers to know the basic response method and be able to adapt to the situation when needed, even if that entails using multiple methods. The world, environments, and communities are constantly going through changes and with these changes, crime and offenders are being more discreet. I would recommend that this department forecasts and maps crime and criminal acts to get a better understanding on the motives of criminals and uses this data to revise their response methods to each situation that may occur in the future.

Training on response methods: Training is a critical aspect of any field, especially law enforcement. These officers receive training in various situations they may encounter while in the police academy, but crime and criminal acts change daily, and criminals are becoming more elaborate with their schemes. I would recommend that officers have yearly training on the basic response methods and a monthly training on the future trends in crime as well as training when a new or revise response method is implemented.

Policing will certainly evolve over the coming years and these changes will require responses from law enforcement officers. Technology will prepare law enforcement agencies more efficient and successful. The future will bring an access to an abundance of information that is not yet available present-day. Law enforcement agencies goal is to respond effectively, efficiently, and appropriately to all types of situations and knowing what may occur in the future and staying up-to-date on the evolving world and future trends will make law enforcement successful in combating crime.
