Table of contents

Every once in a while, you will encounter something that leads you to question a text, quote, or song. Your line of questioning will delve into analyzing the subject fully and offering your feedback on the same. For example, what you think it intended, why it was written in that tone when it came into existence, and many more aspects. This line of questioning is in line with writing evaluation essays.

The nature of writing an evaluation essay leads you to review the subject in a way that leaves everything bare. Your aim is to understand the text and relay the same through your evaluation.

What is an Evaluation Essay?

The starting point of writing such a paper is asking yourself, what is an evaluation essay? The answer may seem simple, but it is far from that. Rather than refer to the process of reviewing a subject, an evaluation essay offers justified proof about a writer’s opinion. It is also commonly referred to as a critical evaluation essay. It is clear from free evaluation essays that critical thinking skills go a long way in ensuring that your evaluation is top-notch. You should be open to utilizing sound judgment in highlighting your main points can be proved right.

How to Write an Evaluation Essay?

Regardless of how many essays you have written, you will find yourself wondering how to write an evaluation essay, especially if it is your first. The basics you need to keep in mind is that the evidence needs to be connected to the topic for your paper to achieve the desired quality. In addition, there is an accepted evaluation essay format that will help decide what to write and the writing itself. All in all, you should make sure that the content is sufficient enough to offer you writing material.

How to Start an Evaluation Essay?

While most people start writing, the key element in starting an evaluation essay is to take a moment to think things through. After reading a couple of evaluation essay examples for students, you may feel you are ready, but the very first thing you should do is settle on a topic. Without a topic, everything else is useless because you do not know what you will write. Therefore, rake your mind, the books, and the internet for a topic that you can build on for your paper. Do not rush into the writing process without first having an idea of what you need to work on.

Evaluation Essay Structure

Any evaluation paper example will reveal a distinct form of structure to which the content adheres to. The work isn’t placed anywhere on the paper. Some segments divide the work into sentences, and each paragraph leads to each other in a way. Here’s a basic structure that is in line with the numerous evaluation essay samples:

  1. Introduction-the most basic part of your essay. Introduce your argument and offer a thesis statement that is in line with the argument
  2. Body- expound on each of your major points extensively. Offer the logic and reasoning integral to the points
  3. Conclusion- review your points and offer a conclusive number of statements on the same

Statement

Your thesis must be arguable; it must state a claim or refute a claim about your issue. A thesis must have some chance of being true in order to be debatable. It should not, however, be widely recognized as true; instead, it should be a statement that people can disagree with. It's important to remember that a thesis includes both an observation and an opinion:

observation + opinion (the "why") = thesis

Seeing if your thesis creates a powerful antithesis is an excellent approach to determine how strong it is.

Common thesis pitfalls:

  • A thesis in the form of a fragment.
  • A thesis that is overly broad.
  • A thesis that is phrased as a question. (The thesis is usually derived from the solution to the question.)
  • Extraneous information is included in a thesis.
  • A thesis that begins with the words "I believe" or "In my opinion."
  • A thesis that deals with a tired or cliched topic.
  • A thesis that includes phrases that lead to erroneous generalizations (all, none, always, only, everyone, etc.)

Outline

In any evaluation essay sample, there is no mention of the outline. Though it is a crucial part of the writing, it doesn’t feature in the final copy. These evaluation essay examples for students only expound on the main points. However, to get to that final part, they started with a first draft. The outline is what makes up your draft in that it gives you the skeleton of your paper. You will only need to add to the parts when you are writing the final copy.

Introduction

Any evaluation essay introduction is where the readers decide whether they want to keep reading or leave the paper as it is. You offer a brief review of what the essay will cover and what point you will be arguing through the introduction. The thesis statement is what wraps up the entire introduction. Before you get to the thesis, you should think of innovative writing skills to get your readers intrigued and anxious for the rest of the paper by simply alluding to the same.

Thesis Statement

As mentioned, the thesis statement is a crucial part of the introduction. It offers the reader the basis that the whole essay is on. Therefore, it needs to be clear and set in a way that aligns with the topic. The article guides your readers, and as they read the rest of the paragraphs, they will be asking themselves how they contribute to the thesis. Therefore, any evaluation essay example will emphasize the thesis by placing it near the end of the introductory paragraph. This way, the reader gets a brief overview of the content.

Body Paragraphs

The body paragraphs are where you will develop your argument. The argument shouldn’t be attacked directly. Instead, it would be best if you approached the topic in a few steps. You could start with an explanation of the topic itself and explaining it in simplistic terms. This aspect could be followed up by factual evidence arguing in support of the point. At this point, you should focus on a single topic per paragraph and, at the same fully argue out how the issue relates to your main argument.

Conclusion

There is a need for a conclusion, as seen in sample evaluation essays. The conclusion is what solidifies your argument in a way that the reader can conceptualize. In this section, you should highlight the points in a simplified form that resolves your entire debate. Offer your readers the closure they need to understand the topic and consolidate the same to the factual evidence provided. In the end, it is through the introduction that the argument will get reinforced completely.

Evaluation Essay Topics

Evaluation essay topics come from various fields and deal with distinct matters. You can, therefore, never lack a topic to write on. Whether you need an idea for a college essay or even one in high school, a quick search online will offer you plenty of options. All in all, here are a few topic ideas that we derived from sample evaluation essays to kickstart you into thinking some of your own:

Tips for Writing a Great Evaluation Essay

One of the most recurrent aspects of writing is taking a stand and arguing it out with facts. Whether you are writing an argumentative essay or evaluation one, you need to argue some facts in line with your point of view. Admittedly the same can be hard at some time, which necessitates a few professional tips. Here are some you can rely on for your evaluation essay:

  • Choose a topic you are conversant with
  • Research and gain as much information as possible on the same
  • Stick to a single topic throughout your paper
  • Support your points with facts, do not simply explain your point of view
  • Avoid vagueness; the more specific you are, the better
  • Each point and fact to be argued in a single paragraph, avoid mixing up your arguments
  • Always reiterate the thesis in the body paragraphs
  • Formulate a conclusion that highlights your main points
  • Do not introduce new information or facts in the conclusion
  • Make sure you check through your paper for grammatical errors
