Deviations From Our County’s Dress Code

I am writing to file a complaint on behalf of the Student Government, regarding the implementation of a strict dress code at the high school district CAVA. The nature of my complaint is as follows: This letter is to you to reject the dress code initiative of our district, as a student in this school district, it is easily noticed how many students have expressed their unhappiness at the thought of a school strict dress code and it’s most likely to them to imagine themselves wearing military garb and being forced to salute. What would happen if students could not dress as whatever they wanted whenever they wanted with any color they prefer?

The majority feel that they have been turned into what seems like robots without the ability to express themselves in this society that promotes individuality and self-expression. Individuals have a right to cultural and religious expression. There is a great diversity of culture and religion in each school district, which should be respected, it should not be a rule or a limit to express or communicate with the society around them by how each dress, because the way they dress helps them to demonstrate who they are and whom they want to be. But when one applies a strict dress code it blocks them from not being themselves, they feel without freedom of personal identity in self-expression and individuality.

Dress codes are notably hard to constrain, for many reasons. Not only can they be subjective, for example: when one teacher thinks is good, another teacher thinks is misbehavior, but the requirement to obey frequently has a way of upsetting both parents and students. While some schools can and do enforce dress codes successfully, more often than not, insisting on dress code policies pits school administrators, and parents and students against each other. This is particularly true if said policies violate the rights to freedom of speech, culture, or religious and expression. There are students that think wearing a simple shirt that says 'Jesus Freak' or socks that have cartoon characters are harmless, and their right to choose their individual style of clothing.

Wearing uniforms will only increase tension between students and administrators. People who advocate these clothing styles obviously feel powerless in the fight for better schools and think that if schools have a well-maintained appearance then all the other factors will just fall into place. Wearing proper clothing helps people dress for success. Many think it is beneficial for learning when fashion's latest trend and all that comes along with it do not distract them. The main problem here is that there is no need for a school to have a strict dress code because it is too much exaggeration, the things that students are aware of not wearing are: limited to violent language or images, items depicting illegal activity, hate speech, profanity, and pornography. They also include visible underwear or bathing suits of similar design. Dress codes should be used to protect people, not unfairly target them. This most recent example is a step in the right direction and hopefully, more schools follow suit.

Another big controversy is the discrimination of female students, all this strict dress code is mostly referring to girls. Schools are enforcing the rules in ways that discriminate against them, it’s almost basically saying that boys' education is far more important than any other female students and that they should be ashamed of their body. Strict dress comes sometimes are too discriminating and this discrimination gives the feeling of having fear, not only because one must follow strict rules that they never had before in their entire life, and is not fair to only just look at girls as the violators. It is understandable why schools have a strict dress code, but what about the boys who wear shorts, or show their shoulders? It's 2019, why are we still over-sexualizing teen girls?

Dress codes are a sticky area for most parents and schools. While most schools need to update the wording of their dress codes, there are ways to ensure that the dress code in your school ensures modesty among students without harming a person's self-expression or self-esteem. For the above reasons, I believe the school board is limiting students to experience or learn from others while they are in a time in high school where that is about to become youth adults and they are learning to make their own decisions, it is acceptable for elementary and middle school (6-8 grade) to have this types of rules for dress codes since is from there were they learned the basics of discipline for life but meanwhile in high school (9-12), is a chance to show everything they have

learned, it is not a liability to give rules regarding the dress code to high school students, the only thing they should know is whatever they do it will be for their own consequence and own decision of their responsibility as a youth adults. Dress codes teach students that conformity and obedience to authority are the most important. Individuality is suppressed. Student's voice is suppressed. Schools need to move away from conformity to adaptability. Instead of suppressing students, schools should promote the development of individuality and voice to better prepare them for life after school. This means dress codes have no place in schools. Hopefully others see the power of an individual standing up for what they believe in and do the same.
