My name is Fatima Traore, and I am a senior at SUNY Oswego.  I am studying Psychology for my major and Health Science for my minor. I transferred here to Oswego two years ago from a 4-year private college.

A detailed description of the organization and why I chose to get involved:

I recently started volunteering at the Richardson-Bates house museum here in Oswego, NY.  The Richardson- Bates museum features an extensive archival collection and exhibit space documenting an important part of the history of Oswego City and County, and of the Richardson and Bates families. I choose to get involved because I wanted to learn more about the history of the town and how the history of this area had affected the town as we know it today. I learned a lot about this from volunteering there.

Summary of the progress made/results achieved and overall experience:

To summarize the progress of my visit and the results achieved, I would say that first of all, it was important in my mind to help be a part of building relationships among the people of the area where I live and work, and to help the local community members meet students from the college who want to demonstrate how students here at SUNY Oswego do care about the history and relationships of this community.  I also feel that progress was made in terms of helping an organization in the city that does not always get the attention they deserve, and that depends extensively on volunteer help in order to get the work done that is needed.  Some of the work I helped with, for example, was to help organize some of the research they were working on for the local history and to learn a little bit about some new additional artifacts that have been recently donated that I could help share with visitors during a recent open house. As far as the overall experience, I would say that it has been a great pleasure working with the board of trustees and learning new things about this town.

4.  At least one way that you could help keep our Richardson-Bates Museum running is to work and connect with the staff, most of them who work there just because they love to help keep our history alive for others to see.  It is also important to listen to the staff because they have a great deal of information to share with the community and you don't want to miss anything, and this is meaningful to the museum that we know about what is done there, and about our local history that we can share with others.  This is partly what helps keep the museum running.  They also need help with volunteering inside as well as outside work that needs to be done all year long, and as always, they need help with fundraising.
