Every neighborhood could use a little beautification, some more than others. The Photosynthesis Platoon refers to a low emission, shared, bicycle-powered group of volunteers who aim to do just that- beautify local communities one garden at a time. Each participant will be assigned one 10-12 mile round trip bike ride per week to Rosemont Farm, a local Boca Raton farm, where they will pick up various tree and flower seeds to bring back to the areas of Boca that need adornment the most. This social practice aims to bring the community of Boca together, while simultaneously providing natural elegance, more trees which provide oxygen, and numerous places for Boca Raton residents to enjoy. Specifically, each garden planted by The Photosynthesis Platoon will represent a different virtue.

Some virtues include friendship, kindness, generosity, and humility. Some gardens will display flowers that actually write out these words, other gardens will display statues or decorative fountains centered on its very own virtue. Another very important goal of The Photosynthesis Platoon is to make these virtues relevant within a world that desperately needs some guidance when it comes to righteousness. The Platoon plans on charmingly reminding communities what a gorgeous world this would be if people begun living out these displayed morals.

This project is object-based when it comes to the actual seeds, soil, fertilizer, flowers, trees, and other décor, but conceptual in the sense that it is encouraging, for the volunteers, community involvement, and encouraging, for the community, ethics through exquisite areas created just for them. Not only does the planted art objectify things such as friendship, but also forms a space for friendship to take place. I believe that live flower arrangement is a traditional art practice, and I believe that The Photosynthesis Platoon gives it a twist. In creating this work, some decisions and choices that I had to make include choosing a catchy name for the project in order to attract volunteers. I had to decide what the best form of transportation was for this project, along with a fun way to get volunteers together and outside to enjoy this beautiful earth.

My decision to use bicycles for this project came from wanting an environment friendly, fun approach to transportation. After all, our goal is to beautify the environment, and using motor vehicles would only mean we are taking one step forward and two steps back. This work is not collaborative at the moment, but I believe that once this project has been launched for a little while, that groups within the Boca community will want to participate in this movement. I aim to provide easy sign up for organizations in the community, such as charities, gyms, Greek Life, student clubs, and children. This work has a beginning and an end, but will complete one cycle each year, starting with the journey to the farm to receive the seeds, and ending with trips to local restaurants to pick up compost in order to fertilize the plants and finish the annual cycle.

I strongly believe that The Photosynthesis Platoon is deserving of support for the following reasons. The Photosynthesis Platoon is a project that displays concern for a slowly disintegrating environment. Through the use of extremely low emission transportation and the addition of trees and plants that provide oxygen and other physical and environmental benefits, the Platoon is a valuable source of community, positive environmental impact, and virtue. After researching the success of Thomas Hirschhorn’s Gramsci Monument, which aimed at encouraging interaction throughout the community, I decided that through creativity, I could kill two birds with one stone and inspire precious human encounter through environmental aid. These days, with all of the available technological outputs, authentic human interaction has decreased rapidly. I believe that giving people purposes such as helping the environment, beautifying the community, introducing suggestions involving virtue, or maybe just simply even riding bikes together, will push them to get off of their iPhones and get involved. With the many benefits that my project offers, I trust that The Photosynthesis Platoon provides something for everyone, and that all of my volunteers will go home knowing that they made a difference.

“The United States lost an average of 384,350 hectares (949,750 acres) of forest each year between 1990 and 2010” (Rolett). With this devastating news to back my project, I strongly believe that my project is and example of social practice because it uses human interaction to create a better environment. The Photosynthesis Platoon is a social practice because it is taking issues relevant in our country today, such as “loss of forests contributes between 12 percent and 17 percent of annual global greenhouse gas emissions” (World Resources Institute) and using social synergy to fix them. My project conforms to and expresses principles of engagement by giving volunteers a reason to leave their houses and the suffocation of technology to cooperate in a beneficial social practice that will change more than just the lives of the participants. This project, to me, means precious communal engagement, environmental aid, the promise of new life, and creativity in action.

This project is intended to give hope to a multitude of people from many angles, including people uneasy about our environment and the effects of deforestation, people concerned about lack of friendship within the community, people troubled by the lack of exercise that occurs within our community, and people bothered by the lack of morals within the Boca community. The Platoon addresses each of these problems through teambuilding and partnership. This project would not be possible without the cooperation of numerous volunteers. This project is art because it puts out useful decoration for our neighborhood, and it is art because it brings about gorgeous new settings within our surrounding area through the display of beautiful flowers and trees.

The Photosynthesis Platoon exudes complexity because of the many steps it takes to ensure that the participants make a solid difference. The work makes me think because of this reason also. It incorporates knowledge involved with environmental impact with fun communal activity. The result of this project is artistically satisfying, because not only does it boast aesthetic beauty, but also creates internal beauty within its patrons through the clever use of flowers that write out different virtues in the soil with the goal of subconsciously creating better humanity. There is originality throughout this project because of the use of bicycles to support its environmental aid, and because of the flower art itself.

Creativity is widely distributed through this project because of the murals painted in our neighborhoods with flowers and trees. Risk is not so much associated with this project only because it is not involving a controversial issue. Risk is also not so much involved because hardly any complaints can be made about this project because of the simple and effective way it operates. This work is relevant in its socio-historical context because of the recent deforestation issues within the United States. With no organizations fixing this issue, soon there could be no tress left at all.

With links to global warming, deforestation can cause massive damage to earth’s atmosphere. Simply put, trees absorb carbon dioxide, so fewer trees means more carbon dioxide, which means more damage. The use of bicycles to carry out this project just loops around to show that this project is an all around helpful agent. The definition of art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form, producing works to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power. This work displays successful art because it takes raw materials such as seeds, soil, and fertilizer to erect a multitude of beautiful statements made to be seen and enjoyed by other humans. This project is a social practice because it aims to make positive change. Merging art with social practice is an ingenious way to arouse the participation of others with promise of creative strategy and aid, and this project does just that.

After engaging myself with articles about social practice such as “How the Art of Social Practice is Changing the World, One Row House at a Time” by Carolina A. Miranda, it is relevant that “social practice is going mainstream as more artists focus their work on making an impact.” Without the fusion of art with social practices, many intelligent and creatively diverse people may be left out of a social movement due to the idea that social issues are boring and can’t be fixed. Allowing a creative outlet for such people increases the amount of participants in social practices, and creates a positive image for them, causing a domino effect throughout the country when it comes to these projects. With something for everyone, social practice can thank art for lending them some very honorable people who are rarin’ to go when it comes to making social changes. Almost everyone owns a bicycle, so why not use it to better our community while making friends and spreading happiness in the meantime?
