I turn left onto the gravel road as my heart beats wildly with excitement as I see all the familiar faces of Camp Marengo. It will be my third year counseling. This year it's for the 5th and 6th grade girls. Camp Marengo is probably one of the best places in the world, bringing everyone closer to God and each other.

I get my assigned cabin, B3, and jump right in with decorating it with Christmas lights like I always do. I wait for the girls to arrive and help them get settled in to there new home for the next five days. As the night falls, we head to chapel and then to our first late night activity, the traditional area campfire s'mores and singing. All the girls in my cabin are having the times of their lives, sharing treats and glow sticks they brought, being silly as we sing, and taking pictures to remember that night.

As the week flies by and all the girls in my cabin become best friends despite not knowing each other at the beginning of the week, I look back and think how it's almost over. I remember the sleepless nights because somebody had a little too much candy, the singing and rejoicing at chapel, playing games and the fellowship with the other campers. The last days comes so I pack my bags and help the girls roll up their sleeping bags and wait for their parents to pick them up.

As I leave the grounds like all the other campers, I am filled with excitement for the next year to come around so I can share the Camp Marengo experience with them again. These girls taught me so much as they always seem to do when I counsel. They taught me to have a lot patience and how just a simple smile can brighten anyone's day. They also taught me to trust one another and that being different is a good thing and can help bring a lot of creativity in whatever I put my mind too.

Volunteering at Camp Marengo every year has become very special to ne. Seeing all my campers in high spirits throughout the week and knowing I had a part in that gives me much gratification. I feel that doing this brings me closer to the community and has made me a more confident person in whatever I decide to do in life.

Describe how you have reached out to help others and/or how you have been involved in your own community. Explain why you serve or get involved, and what you received in return - that is, what you have learned or how it has made you feel. Think in broad terms. List your most recent activity first. Freshmen year, I started volunteering after I joined the multicultural club at my school. I found out what volunteering was through the club. I had been in the U.S. for just four years at the time therefore I wasn't familiar with many things. Although it was mandatory to volunteer in concession stands, I wanted to be a part of it because it was a way for me to giving back. Once I put together a talent show and played my role as a judge. I helped out in the school's concession stand while I was in my soccer team too.

Furthermore, I volunteered outside of school at the Ethiopian Student Association at the University of Minnesota, Feed My Starving Children and Books for Africa. I learned the true meaning of volunteering at Feed my Starving because packing food to be sent overseas was heartfelt and something I will always remember. I get involved because using my time to do something that helps people in some way is very important to me. Volunteering has given me opportunities to leam from different people and gives me chance to learn more about what's going on in my community.
