The problem with many animal rights articles is that they are completely and utterly biased. They use adjectives and imagery that portray an image that simply isn't accurate. For example, in the article that we read in class, it states that pig farmers “castrate piglets by ripping out their testes with their bare hands". This statement is a fine example of the ignorance and slander used by these individuals and their organizations. One can not simply rip a piglets testicles out using only their hand. They use proper tools and techniques to ensure no infection and minimize pain.
To ensure the livelihood of the pigs the following steps should be taken: Animals should be feed twice daily. water should be automatic and on at all times, the animals should be kept in clean pens with a feeding area and an area to walk around in, all of the pens should kept clean regularly, deep clean an area before rotating new hogs in, a vet should be kept on site at all times, medicine should be administered as necessary, funnel the hogs to transport them, use noise makers to keep them moving, runt piglets should be placed in C02 crates and put down humanely, make sure every animal is either instantly or painlessly killed. To ensure that the public has a positive perception of agriculture the following steps should be taken: invite classes to watch the process, everything from birth to death to harvest, show them that the industry is not a place of misery but a place of comfort and met needs.
The above steps can be taken to guarantee the quality of life, and wholesomeness of product derived from these animals. True animal welfare ensures and provides anything the animal needs to survive and easily do so. On the other hand, animal rights only shows the anomalies in the industry. the “bad eggs”. If this is all the consumer sees, it portrays an untrue gruesome image of the pork industry, and agriculture as a whole. The real story is a tale of hard work and an unwavering compassion for the animals. It the industry is to be exposed, expose it as a whole, not just the “bad eggs". For these reasons I side with animal welfare as the wholesome and true way that livestock is taken care of.
