The first job one has is always special. There are many reasons for why the first job is so special. The experience will always stick with you. A first job gives you chills because you may not know how to do anything yet. Asking for a job may be a struggle for many, but after the first time, it will be easy.
Lawn work during the summer is never a bad first job. Mowing lawn definitely provided me with enough money to get what I want. A first job certainly teaches you about the value of money.
When I was about thirteen years old, I wanted to buy soccer cleats from the Nike store in Gadsden, but I barely had money. My parents did not just give me money out of the blue. I had to find a job in order to purchase the cleats I wanted. So, I thought as to who could give me work around town; to point out, I lived in the town of Collinsville, which was fairly small, with two street lights, and hardly any population; however, my neighborhood had enough people that needed help in their yards.

I went to the oldest person I knew in my neighborhood, Mrs. Patty. She was roughly in her fifties, and could not take care of her garden anymore. She had a variety of flowers, an extensive grass lawn, and a few banana pepper plants. This being my first time asking somebody for a job, I was nervous. I took a deep breath and went on her two small front steps, stood tall, and knocked on the door.
She answered, and I nervously asked, “Mrs. Patty, do you need help with your lawn and garden? I see it is getting pretty rough out there.” Mrs. Patty was very happy I offered her to help with her lawn. Not one time did we ever talk about how much I was going to get paid.
Therefore, my first job was to mow grass. I quickly ran back to my house, about a mile away from Mrs. Patty’s house, and got my old lawnmower to take back to her house. After this exhausting part of the day, I went to her garden and started pulling weeds That was all I did for my first day, and it took me about two hours. I asked her much I would get paid, and she said, “I will give you $7 an hour.” It was less than I thought I would get paid, but at least I had a job.
After getting those $14, I walked the few miles to the supermarket downtown, right next to a Baptist Church.. I went to the sports section of the store and bought some Nike soccer cleats. They were not the same ones that I wanted before, but I still liked them. One of my favorite hobbies was playing soccer; therefore, I was excited to go to the park and play a pickup game with my friends.
After many days of working for Mrs. Patty, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to save even more money for games, shoes, clothes, and many other stuff. Pulling weeds and mowing lawn was definitely not what I planned to do at the age of thirteen, but it was what I had to do in order to get what I needed and what I wanted. After all, the sweat and tiredness pay off at the end when at the end of the day you have a nice cold gatorade to sip from.
