Three Centers of My Future Life
I have found three centers of my future life: philosophy, China’s politics, and literature. (I will elaborate on the first two centers in this essay.) A career might be teaching and researching at a university while writing and participating in Chinese politics.
For philosophy, as briefly described in the essay of academic planning, I want to focus on artificial intelligence and philosophy. The first step is to understand philosophy in this new artificial intelligence context, relating to metaphysics, philosophy of mind, and free will. Then I shall move into areas of ethics. Specifically, in the future there is a possibility of the emergence of an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) which has a significant attribute of having free will.
Free will is the essence of humans’ self-recognition and the foundations of the value of our knowledge, ideas, and emotions. While free will already suffers philosophical challenges, the emergence of AGI would raise entirely new and complex contexts in which free will and its implications face challenges that we now may not even recognize, and thus accordingly raise challenges in ethics, law, and economics…This may be the greatest challenge humans ever faced.

Politically, at Peking I am an organizer and active student in student activism, and I will continue this career in my future years.
In China’s activism, we craved to be political much earlier before realizing the nature of politics is in fact to lead a good life, and the greatest task is to explore what a good life is. And one of the absurdities which we face is that this great yet burdensome task in fact relates heavily to philosophy, not just activism, which we however must achieve, while we also need to be competent at organizing and motivating at the practical level.
Therefore, the political activists’ task is a both profound and earthly one, and when we fail at either of these aspects, we become immature, impulsive, harm people, or even fail, as my experience in the Peking University Marxist Society has shown before. From another perspective, due to China’s long, unique, and magnificent history and culture, it will take tremendous hardships for China to enter modernity and solve the questions of modernity. It is a opportunity, though also a requirement, for China to reshape its culture and traditions in relation to the western culture and philosophy.
Thus, though I took a quite profound approach to philosophy in my early stages of study, I would like to expand my scope to fields of ethics and sociology in later careers, which my study in philosophy and Classics should have already built a foundation at that time. I have a strong belief that political change requires action, theories must be practiced, and courage must be supported by humble and rational passion based on solid philosophical understanding. And I am willing to devote myself concretely and fully to this cause, as I have done at Peking with my friends and schoolmates.
