In continuation, technology has also had a serious outcome to people having health issues, with either physically with their body appearance or mentally. This is caused due to people having to be expected to be a person that society tells them to be. Although, we are much more virtually connected, social media does not give the emotional support that a human really needs. According to, the article Text or Talk: Is Technology Making You Lonely? By Margie Warrell who emphasizes,”Recent studies have found that despite being more connected than ever, more people feel more alone than ever. Surprisingly, those who report under 35 who are the most prolific social networks of all” (Warrell 11).

To elaborate, most teenagers feel as if they have to portray someone they’re not. Young teenage girls are given an image to “look up” to and their mind goes immediately into having a mindset that they have to meet those expectations. The expectations that are given to developing young women are irrational and unhealthy. Thus, this could later conclude to them having mental health issues with who they are;therefore, causing severe depression and or even suicidal thoughts.

Technology can mentally and physically change one's life forever, causing them to no longer know who they truly are. On the other hand, opponents claim that as a matter of fact that this is more likely to help people who suffer with social anxiety. This makes them feel more comfortable with who they are as a person. The author goes as far to argue that no one is being left out from anything because of the advancement of technology.

Eric Zeman explicates,” Some 15% said they wanted to interact with others outside the group, and 10% used their phone to avoid participating in whatever the group, was doing. So yes, smartphones do help people act in an antisocial manner; however, Pew says people often use their smartphones to improve or enhance the group interaction”(Zeman 10). This reveals, that by having a phone and communicating virtually, this can help people who have a hard time interacting, which gives them the opportunity to connect and make new friends. However, on a first reading this may appear that Zeman’s statement is much more valid, but overall is false.

The author to the article Is Technology Making People Less sociable? comments, that technology is what adds on to teens anxiety. He alleges, “In one study, we monitored anxiety levels of smartphone users when we wouldn’t let them use their phones, and found that the heavy smartphone users showed increased anxiety continued to increase across the hour-long study. Moderate users showed some anxiety, while light users showed none”( Hampton 6). This displays, that technology has taken a major role in a teens life but it has also taken a big role on the relationships of the family having to watch their own child suffer with hating themselves. Teenagers lives are out at risk and they are damaging the way they live.

Moreover, Margie points out that life is almost like a competition to see who has the so called “better” life. To elaborate, people only choose to show the greater parts of their life, which the outcome is them not being able to open up and express how they’re becoming lonely. She specifies, “But whether loneliness leads people to the internet, or the internet to loneliness, it seems that many of us turn to the internet to avoid simply being with ourselves” (Warrell 11). People will continue to not notice that they’re worsening their mental state, and aren’t completely aware of how mentally harming technology can be to such young minds. Social media seriously harms everyone’s mental health.
