Desktop publishing has brought me to an understanding of my role as a graphics designer in the presentation of information. A graphics designer is tasked with the responsibility of collecting information including photos and images, typology and collection of arts to be used in the creation of a design. The design is used for the creation of graphics to be used in advertisements, brochures, published and print media. The main role of a designer in all the above is to enable representation of information in a memorable and accessible way.
As a designer, I have to ensure that the information does not conflict with the cultural values of any of the target audiences. I have to be able to represent the information in a manner that is easily understandable to the audiences. This means that as a designer I have to understand the cultures of the different audiences and their values. Designers have to view the information in the perspective of the viewer in order to understand how easily the audience will understand the information being presented. If the designer does fails to understand the cultures of the target audiences, the information may be presents in a way that it offends the target viewer. The information may not relate to the target view and so it will fail to meet its purpose. The audience may not be able to understand the information easily enough and so the design will not serve its purpose.
In this class, I learned vocabulary and concepts used in design and desktop publishing that will assist me in my career. I learned the use of styles, genres and motifs, and the basics of designing and layout for a print document. This class among all design class I had, I learned to use technology like the adobe triads in producing a different form of design. On top of all, I know the impact of media messages on the audience and how to question my work.

In design courses, I will use the knowledge I learnt in desktop publishing, and the concept of adjusting client desires and demands to create a successful design and production. I will also be able to use the knowledge I learnt on the application of people's works. I will also be able to create different forms of design such like newsletters, flyers... etc. with more confident. Most importantly, I will be able to apply the information about the use of directional flow and white spaces in images and information.
My strengths as a graphic designer are the ability to use what I have learnt in different cause and apply it to my work as a designer. I have been able to combine what I earn in class with experience and passion in arts and design to come up with good projects. In each design class, my skills and knowledge were improved, and I always have the feeling that I want to learn and expand my knowledge more.
My weakness are the limited experience in graphics and designing that finite my design classes. Also, the little knowledge I have of the international cultures. However, I have learnt how to research about different cultures of the world and how to incorporate these cultures in design. I can improve my weaknesses by practicing more beside my classes, reading and learning more about different cultures of the world and how to incorporate these cultures in design.
Adobe Illustrator is used in the creation of vector images used for creation of logos and other personal works in both digital and print forms. Adobe Photoshop is used for photo editing and can be used by anyone. Adobe InDesign can be used to design different layout and publishing such as brochures, flyers, newspapers and even business cards, and many other forms. Using the adobe triad, I will be able to combine vector images and edit photos then combine them with useful information. As a designer, these tools will be very useful as I plan to better my skills in web and graphic design and desktop publishing.
