This student is one of the Kickstarter Grant winners and will be basing this assignment on her future non-profit, “AccesSuccess”. At AccesSuccess the board members are volunteers and will be assigned any required executive leadership titles needed to legally operate the organization. As a newly hired volunteer executive leader of this small non-profit organization, this student would also be a newly hired volunteer member of the board of directors. AccesSuccess is an online non-profit agency providing vocational resources and mentoring to youth aged 12-21 in the Greater Omaha area. The program will form partnerships with local school districts, businesses, and trade unions. AccesSuccess' goal is to foster a commitment to young people that will promote independent career development, strong interpersonal skills, and reassert a sense of hope in their future.

Only through education can awareness be established that will give youth the commitment to follow through on a personal path to success with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Youth are matched with a caring adult volunteer who is trained to focus on positive reinforcement, trust-building, and the achievement of goals, by engaging youth in the one-on-one outing and group adventures in the community. Mentors and youth agree to meet for between 10-15 hours per month for a full year.

AccesSuccess is an online tax-exempt not-for-profit education and career consulting organization that provides youth with alternative higher education opportunities for successful careers and pairs youth with professionals who are volunteer mentors. While there is no industry standard for large, medium, or small non-profits, AccesSuccess is small, with one part-time employee, three board members, and volunteers on an as-needed basis. First-year funds are $20,000. The mission of AccesSuccess is the pursuit of the following principles: AccesSuccess wants to inspire commitment that will promote independent career development, and strong interpersonal skills, and reassert a sense of hope in their future. AccesSuccess wants to expand the perspective of youth to make them aware of the possibilities beyond traditional 4-year college. Youth are dramatically influenced by their support system. AccesSuccess wants to surround youth in a positive, inclusive environment. The vision of AccesSuccess is to create a better everyday future for Omaha youth.

The part-time employee acts as an office assistant. She answers e-mails and phone calls, monitors the website, sends out mailings and responds to incoming mail, and accompanies board members to fundraising events. Volunteers would be recruited on an as-needed basis for fundraising events, career events, and mentoring positions. Their roles would vary by the needs of the organization but would primarily be mentoring-related. Youth are matched with a caring adult volunteer who is trained to focus on positive reinforcement, trust-building, and the achievement of goals by engaging youth in one-on-one outings and group adventures in the community. Mentors and youth agree to meet for between 10-15 hours per month for a full year.

Board of directors. According to the National Council of Nonprofits (2018), a board of directors has three primary duties - the duty of care, duty of loyalty, and duty of obedience. These duties ensure that the board of directors takes care of the nonprofit, makes decisions in the best interest of the nonprofit, and obeys applicable laws, regulation, bylaws, purpose, and/or mission. At AccesSuccess board members are volunteers.

My role. As the newly hired volunteer Executive Director of this small non-profit organization this student would also be a newly hired volunteer member of the board of directors. In addition to the three primary duties of the board, this student will also take on the typical duties of an Executive Director (also known as a Chief Executive Officer, or CEO). These may include, but are not limited to, making major decisions, managing overall operations and resources, and acting as the main source of communication between the board of directors and operation.

AccesSuccess matches a caring professional volunteer with a referred youth. AccesSuccess will also offer vocational and entrepreneurial resources such as vocational/trade school referrals, job shadows, job application and interview assistance, career aptitude and workplace fitness testing, practice testing, and professional literature. AccesSuccess embodies the spirit and values of entrepreneurship, giving shape to bold dreams and turning belief into action. The goal of the program is to identify youths who are having a turbulent transition to successful adulthood and offer a positive support system to avoid those pitfalls that a higher education and career can solve. The focus is slightly different for everyone. Sometimes it is as easy as a youth identifying with his mentor rather than a person involved in criminal or destructive activities. Once a student has entered high school with a history of classroom disturbances and poor academic skills, it takes a tremendous proactive effort to assist a student in redirecting their lives.

For youth not interested in attending or unable to attend a traditional 4-year school but uncertain what path to take, AccesSuccess offers resources to research options and discover what path is right for them. These include resources on various vocational careers such as books, videos, pamphlets, and contact information for local professionals; links to local vocational/trade schools and pamphlets as well as course catalogs; a list of profitable and popular local trades and news articles about them; and career aptitude tests to help guide searches for those who do not know where to begin.

While there are career centers in the Omaha metro area, these organizations focus on traditional 4-year colleges. The vocational programs in existence focus on rehabilitation – such as individuals with disabilities or returning veterans. AccesSuccess is a program that is in direct response to the growing number of youth that are falling through the cracks at school. AccesSuccess offers youth the opportunity to make a change in their lives.

This student prefers the servant leadership style. Servant leadership involves turning traditional leadership upside down and putting the needs of others first to help individuals develop and perform as well as possible. Instead of employees working to serve the leader, the leader is working to serve the employees (Servant Leadership Institute, 2018). In “The Servant as Leader” Greenleaf statesЮ

The servant-leader is servant first…It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions…The leader-first and the servant-first are two extreme types. Between them are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature.

And he difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people’s highest priority needs are being served. The best test, and difficult to administer, is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society? Will they benefit or at least not be further deprived?

These may seem difficult to test for in an organization, while profits and retention are much easier goals to visualize (though these are improved in servant led organizations). Servant leadership calls for accountability, deep inner work, and development of capacities such as thinking, persuasion, intuition, foresight, and listening. To this end, Greenleaf developed “Greenleaf’s Best Test” which investigates the outcomes for those who are being served, how well servant leadership principles are being followed, the behaviors of the designated leader, and matters of heart, spirit, joy, and community.
