It was July 4, 2006, on a Friday morning. I woke up to my dad and my stepmom arguing over something that happen the day before. The whole family was supposed to go to my uncle’s lean woods house, but because of the argument between my dad and stepmom that didn’t happen. So me and my dad headed off to the movies and her and my brothers went to her mom's. Later on that day, we got a phone call from my uncle saying that “they took little Walt to the hospital because he stopped breathing. When we arrived all I remember was hearing my cousin say “he’s gone”. The death of my 1st cousin and his funeral would change the way I viewed life.

Waking up that morning all I heard was my dad and my stepmom arguing. Going back and forth over I don’t know what. Maybe the bills was starting to get the best of them, or it might have just been one of those days. Well, let me say this argument messed up all our plans. So instead of going to my uncles, we all went our separate ways. Me and my dad went to the movies and my stepmom and my brother Reuben and sister tiare went to their grandma's. I was so excited to spend the day by myself with my dad though. On the way to the movies, we stopped by Ralph to get some candy. Thinking in my head should I get a snicker or something sweet? I went with the snickers. Now it was time to go to Superman and Batman. The movie was real good, I gave my dad a big hug now it was time to hit the road. Leaving we notice we was falling short on gas so we had to go hit up Am Pm.

Coming out of the gas station door my dad had a scary look on his face. When he got in the car I asked him what had happened. “Walt stopped breathing” with a calm voice he said. In my head I was thinking oh ok he gone be alright, there’s no way he’s going to die. I had a feeling my dad was thinking the same way from the way he went from scared to super calm. On the way to the hospital going like 90 mph on the 60 east freeway. On the way, we went to go get my other cousin Leon that was there when Walt stopped breathing. I asked him what had happened. He told me that they were all playing a 3on-3 basketball game, and Walt did a crossover but collapsed when he did it. They had tried to attempt cpr which would of saved his life the doctor said, but no1 there knows how to do it.

The crazy thing is my stepmom took cpr classes, so if that argument never happened and we would of went to my uncle's house Walt would still be here. Than to top it off the ambulance had taken the wrong way to get to the hospital it took longer to get there. When we got to the hospital my cousin Sean was on the crumb crying. By that we knew what happen Walt was dying. The doctor came out and said “I’m sorry to tell you he didn’t make it, what you want us to do with the body”. All I heard was roars of cries coming from my family members. At that same time, the fireworks started going off. My uncle asked me and my dad did we want to go see him my dad said no because he wasn’t ready, but I went in. I remember seeing him on his deathbed.

When I touch him he was hard, but it looked like he was just sleeping. The doctor came in and told us what he said he think caused his death. He told us that he choked on his throw up. I remember thinking all you guys had to do is turn him on his side, and you guys didn’t even know how to do that. I didn’t cry than that would come later. I got in the car and headed home. That was a silent ride home. My dad finally spoke. He said “how can a healthy college basketball player just collapse and die like that”. When we got home I went in my room and lied down. Sitting there reminiscing about all the good times we had and the fact that I would never see him again. I broke down and started crying.

July 12 was the day of his funeral. Basketball was his life so we all wear basketball jerseys. He had on his school jersey. I remember asking my uncle Walt why he didn’t have on a suit. He said why I would bury my son in something he wasn’t. That made a lot of sense to me. As everyone started to come things started to heat up. I remember Little Waltz mom yelling at my uncle telling him this was his fault. Everybody was trying to hide the real reason he passed away. Well, his dad and a couple of people. My auntie Nicki told me the reason he died was that someone gave him an ecstasy pill, and his body couldn’t take it. The whole place exploded once that was said. I guess my dad was right there was a bigger story to this whole thing.

I can’t believe the family tried to cover this up. Shocked by the news my dad got very angry and to top it off my uncle and little Walt wasn’t getting a long that well. Ultimately this broke the family has a whole. No one could be trusted at this part. We had got over it for now and celebrated my cousin’s life instead of crying about it. His death would change the way I viewed thing because now I know anything can happen you can be here than one day you could be gone. Walt taught me same good life lessons that I follow today. He said you can turn up and have fun, but do it safely. He’s life ended because he wanted to try something new, and it cost him his life
