In July of 2011,1 went on a cruise with my family. It was a life changing experience, seven beautiful days in paradise. We arrived on the ship on a Wednesday, I spent the rest of the day sleeping. When we woke up on Thursday, we explored many things with my family on an island called Andros Island. We went to bed Thursday, and when we woke up Friday, we continued exploring Andros Island. On Friday, my family and I went scuba driving. You couldn’t even put into words the beautiful sights, which lay in the ocean.

On Friday evening, at dinner, the event coordinator approached my family and said “I hope you are all enjoying your cruise, tomorrow night the ship is having a pizza party for all the guests, you all are invited, I hope you can come.” That night the boat set sail for the island of Inagua. The next day, my family kept on exploring, and that night we got ready for the party on the ship.

When we got there, it was quiet, no one was there. Then people started coming in: no one was my age, no one was even close to my age, no one was even close to my parent’s age! All the people there were senior citizens. There were 1995 other people on the boat, and the only people there were seniors.

I really wanted to leave, but my parents wanted to stay. I just sat done (should be down), still, still as a child frighten by a storm, then my parents called me over. My mom said, “Stop sitting by yourself, come over here.”

They were talking to a group of seniors, and they were laughing. Laughing? Why would anyone be laughing? I walked over, an old man was telling a joke, and guess what? It was funny, hilarious, the funniest joke I have ever heard. The jokes continued, and they were all funny. One of the jokes I heard was “A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says: "That's the ugliest baby that I've ever seen. Ugh!" The woman goes to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her: "The driver just insulted me!" The man says: ‘You go right up there and tell him off - go ahead, I'll hold your monkey for you.’”

Soon more people arrived. Even when they arrived we still stayed and talked with the seniors. My parents and I stayed all night, talking and laughing with the seniors. They told us stories about their lives, the good and the bad. I hadn’t had so much fun in my whole life.

With this I now have a new appreciation for seniors. I never truly got to meet my grandparents, on either side of my family. Both of my grandparents on my mom’s side were dead before I was born. My grandparents on my dad’s side of the family died when I was young. Even though I met them, I have no clear memories of them. My whole life before the pizza party, I thought that seniors were: old, lazy, and didn’t know what they were talking about. Since the pizza party, I have done a lot with seniors. I volunteer at an assisted living center for seniors, I help seniors with their grocery shopping, and volunteer annually at a senior citizens’ Christmas party. My trip to the Bahamas was life changing.
