Most individuals that attend college do so because they believe it will help them secure a more profitable future. In most cases it does, on average people who attend college earn twice as more as the individuals who do not. Employers say they look for individuals who can analyze critically, think creatively, and communicate effectively, things that are supposedly learned in college.

I am quit conflicted with my feelings on the liberal arts program. First, I am attending the university of Kansas because I want to learn, and better myself as a human being. I am not worried about finding a job after college. I believe I am fully able, and fully capable of working a job that requires a degree without one. I think that the liberal arts program is mostly a waste of time and money, if, you are looking to find that desired job. Because when you obtain that specific job I guarantee you that you will hardly use half of what that was taught to you. If you are not looking for a specific job, and just want to better yourself then I believe that the liberal arts program is wonderful. You learn a great variety of different topics, and it helps you become a well-rounded person.

For me especially, it is extremely frustrating when I need to take topics in mathematics while pursuing a journalism degree. When in reality I will only need basic math throughout my life, there goes a couple grand I could of used. The cost of college increases nearly 12% every single year! If this fact was not insane enough then the fact that you are forced to pay thousands of dollars for classes you will never use in the work force will defiantly top it. For a while it was extremely hard for me to enjoy my time at KU because of that very thing. Maybe that is why employers look for college grads, because they have gone to hell and back, because they can let go of, and maybe because the are in extreme debt.

On the other hand the revenue that the liberal arts program generates makes for a great campus life outside of the classroom. Our tuition money does go to some great things on campus. Services like the bussing system, Watkins health, many physiatrist services, the two main libraries, which offer millions upon millions of dollars of information, and a wonderful union for the students. Other than the services that are generated by the liberal arts program, the university brings together a plethora of individuals together, thousands of people all in the same boat, and that makes things just a little bit better for me.

Out of everything that is available to take at the university of Kansas the liberal arts program is one of the best in my opinion. Through all the negatives I believe that it is more important to obtain a general education rather than a specific one. Say you graduate in a specific field, and later in your life you are laid of because of a decrease in the effectiveness of your field. You really are not trained for much other than what your major was. But if the same thing happened with a liberal arts major it would be a different story. In my opinion these graduates are more well rounded and in turn could adapt to varying circumstances in life. All in all college in general can be a huge waste of time and money. But in my opinion the liberal arts program is the best bang for your buck, the more round for your circle, and the most food for your stomach.
