Women have always been seen as weak, defenseless and submissive. Women's struggle for equality was and is a difficult battle. Even though the idea of men and women being equal was technically won in 1920, women today are still fighting the battle day and night. We owe all the honor and respect to the women in the 1800's who were brave, independent, and fearless enough to stand up for what they believed in. As a woman in the 21st century I can firmly say that we are still underestimated and seen as that weak, innocent women. As time progresses and crime increased men were seen as the main culprit of violent act of crimes, it was uncommon of a women to be arrested for a violent crime.

Subsequent studies of women who had been charged with and/or convicted of murders began to emerge during the late 1960s. This all changed when Aileen Wuornos was born on February 29th, 1956 and would later be known as the first female serial killer. While no one should kill ever, Aileen became the first female serial killer because he had to do what she had to do to protect herself, She was forced to become a prostitute to survive, and she had terrible childhood which lead her to be a criminal.

A serial killer is defined as a person who murders three or more persons in at least three separate events, with a "cooling off period" between kills. Serial killers aren't always some random stranger with a agenda. It includes health care workers who murder their patients because they believe they are taking them out of their misery.

Parents who murder their children which could be for many different reasons. One reason could be for example, the mother who plans to take her own life and believes that the children are better off in heaven with her. Another reason could be spousal revenge, in which a parent kills the children to hurt the partner who cheated on them. Another type of serial killer is professional assassins who operate under the confines of organized crime syndicates and the type of serial killer Aileen is known for would be a person who kills multiple spouses/lovers.

Aileen Wuornos born as Aileen Carol Pittman was born to father Leo Dale Pittman and mother Diane Wuornos and had one brother Keith in Rochester, Michigan. Her father was a psychopath and child molester who was incarcerated at the time of her birth; he eventually committed suicide. Her mother abandoned Aileen and her brother who were adopted by her maternal grandparents. Her own grandfather was pedophile who sexually abused her since a young age.

Aileen began engaging in sexual activities in school in exchange for drugs and food when she was just nine years old. She never knew any normal familial relations and became pregnant as a result of rape when she was just 14— she claimed that her brother was the father of her child. Possible biological contributions to serial killers include head injury involving brain damage, brain anomalies, and faulty genetics. There are four different types of abuse: Physical abuse is defined as causing or allowing any nonaccidental physical injury. Sexual abuse is defined as any sexual activity, practice or instruction which either meets the criminal definition or is unhealthy for a child considering his/her age and level of development.

Criminal activity is defined as "committing or allow[ing] to be committed any illegal sexual act upon a child including incest, rape, fondling, indecent exposure, prostitution, or allowing a child to be used in any sexually explicit visual material." Psychological abuse refers to any acts such as intentional humiliation, causing emotional conflict, or any act that could be psychologically damaging to the child, such as dressing a boy like a girl. Neglect is defined as failing or refusing to provide adequate food, clothing, shelter, emotional nurturing, or health care. Aileen suffered through all four.
