The Three Responsibilities of a Global Citizen
Transnationalism emphasizes the new movement of flows between economic. Political, social, cultural and environmental aspects. This weakens the control of the nation-state. Which is a new concept to most countries, the idea of belonging to a global community compared to one nation. A global citizen is someone who sees themselves as part of a bigger picture. And plays a key role in the world community. And whose actions support the values and practices of ending world issues such as world hunger, climate change and terrorism. The three responsibilities of a global citizen that. I will be discussing in my paper can also be considered as steps in order to become an active global citizen. I will be using a personal example as well as class research in order to emphasize the importance for each responsibility.
First, there is a responsibility to understand one's own perspective and the perspectives of others on global issues. Almost every global issue has different ethnic, cultural, social, political, and economic perspectives attached to it. Parallel to this, is to respect cultural diversity and to remain culturally sensitive. The multiple perspectives that exist with most global issues often are a reflection of different cultural belief systems. For example, during my spring break trip to the Dominican Republic with the non profit organization, Wine to Water, one of the first things that we were taught was their politics, food, economics and culture. In order to do anything, whether it be to make a change, or to just be aware, the first step is to be educated. We also had to adapt and respect to the differences of a new country, even if we didn't agree with their beliefs and actions.
Secondly, the responsibility to make connections and build relationships with people from other countries and cultures. As global citizens there is the need to reach out and build relationships with people from different parts of the world in order to hear the different viewpoints of issues and see how it will affect different actors. Once that is accomplished, it is then possible to make decisions that will attempt to benefit everyone. By building relationships and making connections increases the trust and peaceful process of making change. An example of this process are nongovernmental organizations. A good definition that shows the relation to global citizens is, "NGOs are generally private voluntary organizations whose members are individuals or associations that come together to achieve a common purpose, often oriented to a public good (Mingst 246)." To combine my personal experience with my example of a NGO, Wine to Water works in countries all over the world such as the Dominican Republic, Nepal, Africa and much more.

Wine to Water emphasizes the importance of making connections with natives in order to fully help due to the fact that they know their homeland and the issues going on typically more than we do. Also, the main goal is to help and improve the overall standard of living, we (as in the people trying to help) need to listen and hear their viewpoints on the issues at hand. When we were making the water filters, we were listening to the workers, who are native to the country, explain their thoughts on the water crisis and how the community members will react to us distributing the water filters throughout their community. Due to globalization, democratic countries, are largely populated with immigrants and people from different ethnic backgrounds which allows flows of information that can help encourage/lead an individual to become a global citizen.The Internet also offers a large range of opportunities in order to connect with people on different issues. So even if traveling abroad is not an option to experience it first hand, it is possible to become a global citizen by building networks with people or to even just educate oneself.
Lastly, the responsibility for advocating the implementation of international agreements, conventions, treaties related to global issues. When a global issue arises, it is important for global citizens to provide advice on how their country can work with other nations to address this issue and how it can work with established international organizations like the United Nations. As well as the responsibility for advocating for more effective global equity and justice for the world community. For example in the Top Risks article that we researched in class, there is an unequal access of technology in the Middle East. Global citizens have the responsibility to work with one another and advocate for global equality and justice solutions to these issues.
Most individuals take pride in being a part of something larger, for example, being a patriot. So why wouldn't everyone love being a member of possibly the biggest community in the world? A global citizen plays a huge role in implementing change. This helps those involved better understand the similarities and differences and search for common solutions for the global issues that everyone faces. In order to promote a global community, those who are global citizens also have the responsibility to educate a new generation of global citizen leaders. This new identity that individuals take on will spread and hopefully promote human rights and solve world issues and create a better standard of living and create a more interconnected world for generations to come.
