Military service members who are and have been deployed to the middle east show high levels of emotional distress and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Post traumatic stress disorder is a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event. This is only when a person either experiences it or witnesses. Bill A1814 "Provides post-traumatic stress disorder from military service during combat may be mitigating factor during sentencing." The court would consider not to give a death sentence to military veterans that have committed a crime under PTSD. There are four types of crimes: first degree crime, second degree crime, third degree crime, and forth degree crime. First degree crimes are involved with murder, if a military service commits a first degree crime they would sentenced 15 years.

Second degree crimes are killing without being it planned, then a person would be sentenced for 7 years. Third degree criminals would be sentenced 4 years, and forth degree criminals would be sentences 9 months. One might argue, why are only military services getting special treatment than other offenders with similar mental illnesses, such as a battered woman suffering from PTSD. It is very clear that the person who has committed a crime is suffering from a mental illness. Members of United States military that are suffering from post-traumatic stress at the time of their offenses (Bill A1814) should not be subject to the death penalty because of serious mental illness, and other variety of reasons.

Post traumatic stress disorder is very common illness that any military veteran can suffer from. A veteran's experiences from the war can have a major impact on their lives for a long period of time. Some people can be cured from proper treatment within months, but for others, there can not be any cure. Some unknown veteran shares his personal experience. "The disorder is characterized by symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, emotional numbness or hyper- vigilance that follow a traumatic experience". Most people assume that killing is the easiest thing to do when serving at the military, but it is not true. Killing someone for the first time is very difficult process to adapt. There are also people that want help, but no one to support and get them the right treatment. Due to the stress from their experiences and PTSD some people commit crimes which they would not if they were in their right senses. Crimes that are committed under someone's influences or under some mental illness is not consider a crime committed by that person. A person who has PTSD shouldn't be sentenced death if he or she does committee a crime.

Military veterans protects our country and everyone living in it by risking their own lives. When they first go to fight any war, from their physical to mental health is perfectly fine. They start experiencing changes after they get back from their first war. The reason behind their mental illness is due to the war, so technically it is not their fault in the first place. Basic military training is a process designed to develop skills which will keep a veteran alive and fighting long after he or she might have given up under more normal circumstances. These patterns do not go away by themselves if they have been burned into the soul by a traumatic experience. It is not a set amount of time to get it out on one's system. Depending on the time of things going back to normal can impact a lot of other people's life. They might even hurt someone else because they have not been treated in the correct manner and that might cause them to have more stress on their mental illness. Instead of sentencing them death the court should help them get the right treatment.
