Technology Through the Ages
After attending the play, Dr. Faustus Lights the Lights by Gertrude Stein and directed by Peter Cirino I was able to see a pattern and connection of technology and its affects on society. This tied in real well with the discussion we had before the play began. Three ideas made during the discussion really caught my mind. How technology causes society to react, the idea of conscious use of technology, and the impact of cell phones on society played a large role in the play.

One of the most unique aspects of the play was the unorthodox use of technology. In most cases, technology is seen as a distraction in settings such as the theatre and the classroom. What the director was able to do was incorporate this distraction as a visual aid for the story being portrayed on stage. It has to do with the idea of conscious use of technology that was touched on by Jess Humphrey. By allowing this use of technology in the theatre in an organized fashion, more attention was directed towards the play. The use was also able to guide the viewer through some of the topics targeted in the play allowing for a better understanding overall.
As a result of the use of the technology as seen in the play, the impact of cell phones on our culture are made more transparent. In the discussion, we touched on the subject that our attention ps as a whole have decreased as a result of technology. During the discussion this was only seen as a theory or idea, but with the use of the play, this theory was put to the test. Cirino decided to use our short attention p to his advantage by taunting us to use our phones in a constructive manner in order to pay closer attention to what was going on in the play. As a result, I was led to believe that the idea of having a shorter attention p due to technology was more than likely correct.
Another use of technology seen in the play occurred when Dr. Faustus took the electric light onto the stage. This was an interesting scene, because of the use of our cell phones throughout the entire play. While we were allowed to use our most common piece of technology, the cast from the play were only first introduced to electric light.
This point in the play touched on what Jessica Pressman touched on in the pre-play discussion. When Dr. Faustus first broke out the light, all of the characters began acting more childish than ever before. The immediate effects of this new technology were somewhat of a parallel to what occurred when we first received cell phones let alone the smartphones we have today. It seemed like Cirino wanted to show our childish reactions to whatever new technology we are introduced to in our lives.
Overall, the play was a very interesting watch. Despite some of the confusing aspects of the play, our use of technology and the points made during the pre-play discussion made the play much easier to follow. Cirino did a very good job of incorporating smart phone into a new realm that is the theatre today.
