Eddie is the main character or protagonist of this story. We begin the book learning that Eddie is an 83-year-old ride inspector who works at Ruby Pier, and although he may not have always done it with a smile, he dedicated his life to keeping the patrons of Ruby Pier Safe. That was evident all the way to the end, thus being represented when he sacrificed his life on his 83 birthday to safe the life of the small girl under the collapsing ride cart. Once Eddie dies he continues onto heaven where upon first arriving he feels confused and just wishes to return to his everyday routine at the Pier. This is mainly because Eddie is considerably a man of mediocrity and after awhile at the pier he had aspired for nothing more. Upon the first few chapters of the book, we wonder why and how Eddie has turned into this grumpy old man and how life has brought him to Ruby Pier. This is a question answered through out his meetings with the five people in heaven who have altered his life. As the reader I came to find Eddie's biggest character trait is his perseverance. After going through so much his perseverance was the only thing that helped him overcome his many obstacles brought about within the novel.
The Captain:
The Captain is Eddies former military captain when they were in war. He was also the second person that Eddie met upon his arrival to heaven. He is a huge character within the novel because the limp that Eddie battled his entire, was due to the fact that the captain shot him. The captain shot Eddie because he did not want Eddie to keep running into the fire and eventually be burnt to death. By shooting Eddie it stopped him so that they can drag him back home without him loosing his life. He did this because he wanted to make sure no man was left behind. Although he was the Captain I wouldn't say that he took the leadership role when Eddie and his fellow soldiers were held captive. Eddie more so took charge and led them out of their imprisonment. Even with that having been said, The Captain is a very courageous man for having fought so many battles.

Eddie's Father:
Although not widely considered as a great father, I feel that Eddie's Father tried to the best he could to raise his sons properly and to be hard workingmen. He was considered to be a drunk and an occasional aggressor but he did mean the best for his family. He was clearly not a very emotional man, an example of that would be when Eddie learned he was to be deployed and his father just merely asked when. His father always made him work, though I do have to let it be known that his father never pushed them. It was almost as if he was grooming Eddie to be his replacement at the pier since Eddie was a teenager. His biggest character trait was a hard worker because he did all he could for Eddie and his family.
