Essays on Euthanasia

The term euthanasia comes from the Greeks and means “easy death.” It is the practice of putting an end to a patient’s life with the intention of putting a stop to his or her suffering and pain. In countries like Belgium and Netherlands where it is legal, they declare that mercy-killing is for the “terminally ill.” Can one determine exactly how terminally ill a person is? Some define the terminal condition as one from which death will occur within six months or less and others state that death is expected in a relatively short time. However, some of those diagnosed as terminally ill do not even pass away for years. According to medical experts, the very specific life expectancy of a patient is virtually impossible to predict.

There have been documented moments in history, 5th Century BC to be more exact, in which the practice of euthanasia and PAS had been performed by practitioner’s even when it was considered taboo and forbidden. In other words, it was done in the dark and away from the eyes of the law and public. According to MacLeod, Wilson, and Malpas (2012), with the introduction of Jewish and Christian values in the 13th Century, euthanasia and assisted suicide were considered intolerable, and St Thomas Aquinas—who was one of the religious figures at the time—condemned the act of ending a life, claiming that it violated God’s wills. Although we now live in the modern 21st Century, the debate for or against euthanasia and assisted suicide remains an issue and its importance had not diminished throughout the years.
