That worship on television; and Catholicism requires more than just going to church every Sunday. Religion exists everywhere and influences the morals, beliefs, and cultures of those who practice it. However, religion in itself is more than just a way to act or think. Although the many religions of the world contain different aspects, traditions, and ideas, one thing can be observed: Religion is an established belief system that incorporates various practices and views to achieve a spiritual goal.
Religions provide teachings and ideas that culminate in a viewpoint of how one perceives his or her relationship with the world around him. Religion may revolve around a higher power or deity; a common idea for many followers is the concept of God, an omnipotent being who is sole ruler of everything and from whom everything originated.
The purpose of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism is to respect and revere this Being, and act toward the rest of the world based on what God wants, in which the three religions' opinions separate. Others may define a higher power as spirits among nature, who have powers that may benefit or harm those who come across them. The Navajos's relationship with the rest of the world involve restoring and maintaining harmony and balance with nature.

The followers of Buddhism do not revere any form of higher being, and although they respect the possibility of the a powerful deity, they do not feel subject to its whim. The idea of an omnipotent being or power may suggest the origin and meaning behind the reason for morality, but even religions without a powerful deity can distinguish for themselves what is or what is not proper. For example, the followers of Judaism seek wisdom and guidance from their religious text known as the Torah, which holds information that establishes God as ruler and gives His instructions in the form of the Ten Commandments; pillars of morality for Jews to uphold. For most religions, it appears that followers depend on either the interpretation by a leader within the community to study religion, or read directly from texts that explain a religion's fundamentals. Followers of a religion may participate and act in set rituals or customs that define their beliefs. The distinct beliefs of each religion reflect the uniqueness of traditions and and rituals that are enacted.
Some customs exist to appease or praise God or another deity, while others are required to bring about harmony. Muslims, the followers of Islam, practice strictly the five pillars of their faith, which include "shahadah, salat, almsgiving, fasting during Ramadan and pilgrimage to the holy site of Mecca" (Porterfield 45).
