One cannot compare the leader who knows the path, to the one that takes a step and then two towards it.

One of my mentors encouraged me to memorize this quote – and I share it now because it will take great leadership moving forward to keep organizations on the right path and continuously improving and evolving with the rapidly changing workplace and marketplace. Opportunities are everywhere but few have eyes to see them.

Organizations and their leaders must broaden their observations to see around, beneath and beyond what they seek so that these opportunities are always in sight. They must continuously explore new frontiers to get out of their comfort zones, expand their curiosity, and never take opportunities for granted. The must be entrepreneurial to effectively identify the right timing and depth of potential  opportunities that can give their businesses the momentum they need to get back on or stay on track and grow. They must multiply success by sharing the significance of the opportunities you’ve seized with others.

Doing that will allow leaders and the organizations they serve to do the following three things in their quest to maximize their own potential and that of others.

1.  Break free from their identity crisis

Leaders must break free from their identity crises before they can develop and manage their leadership identity – the unique distinguishing factors they are known for and that can be consistently expected of them to fuel workplace engagement and propel growth.  Without a strong identity, leaders unknowingly create tension; when they become self-satisfied and complacent, they lose touch with people – and how to maximize their full potential to drive success in the workplace, amongst external partners, and in the marketplace.

2.  Define their leadership identity

A strong leadership identity can provide clarity and alignment throughout the organization. It leverages the unique differences in people to see and seize opportunities previously unseen. People begin to understand how that leadership identity influences the evolution of the business when they can articulate the unique ways they think, what gives their leadership distinction, the impact their presence creates and what it is they serve. Leaders can be more proactive about discovering the full potential in others, and equally in themselves.

3. Identify and close opportunity gaps

Opportunity gaps are created when leaders are not innovative enough, conform to the old ways of doing things, and lack the self-trust to evolve. When organizations work in silos, leaders are not intimate enough with the business.  Slow to serve the unique needs of the changing workplace and marketplace, leaders gravitate towards the same thinking and behavioral tendencies that are putting their businesses at risk. Leaders must learn to identify and close opportunity gaps with greater speed and agility or these gaps will continue to widen as organizations unknowingly mismanage competitive threats, unforeseen trends, and what they should be solving for in their business.
