"Why should I hire you? You are an international student... a foreigner in our country. Why shouldn't I hire an American for this job?"

International students who apply for practical training or work authorization due to economic hardship often tell me they wonder how they should answer these type of questions. Even when they are not verbalized, many students assume this is what U.S. employers are thinking. They fear they will not find a job because they are "foreigners." They do not believe they can compete with U.S. citizens. They feel defeated before they even begin their job search. If you feel this way, I have a simple message for you: Use your "foreignness" as a strength and asset! The American job market values the ability of workers who can be flexible, adjust to new circumstances without losing their effectiveness, and meet new challenges with confidence.

As an international student you have proven that you have this ability. Finishing a degree in the U.S. has required you to make major cultural adjustments, to adapt to a very different environment, and to meet new challenges with confidence. It is not easy to earn a degree in another culture using a "foreign" language. If you have earned a degree in a foreign land, it is appropriate to believe that you can adjust and be flexible in your new job. Use this as a selling point during your job interview!

Many American employers now want "team players" who are flexible and understand cooperative management styles. They want employees who know how to cooperate, respect others, and work as a team. American culture, which was built on "rugged individualism," has become a culture of radical individualism. Many companies under the influence of Dr. Deming and his concepts of continuous quality improvement are trying to instill team work. Dr. Deming's greatest success has been in Japan where he was recognized by many as the father of modern Japan's economy. His concepts are now serving as the quality improvement policy of General Motors, Ford Motors, most hospitals, and many managed health care companies. Most international students have been raised in a culture that values cooperation, respect, group decision making, and self-discipline. If so, you have the skills that many American companies are wanting in their employees!

A growing number of companies need workers who have multi-cultural skills. Many American companies are awakening to the fact that we are moving progressively toward an interdependent global economy. With this new perception, the realization is coming that employers need workers who have multi-cultural sensitivity, international experience, and multilingual skills. You have these skills! Some companies may be on the verge of expanding to your home country. Imagine the expertise you could bring in this situation!

Before you go to your next job interview bolster your self-esteem! Use "self-talk" to tell yourself what you have to offer. Approach the interview with confidence. Market yourself as a worker who has the skills needed for today's global economy. Do not be intimidated because you are not an American. Turn your "foreignness" into an asset!
