Disney is a powerful force to be reckon with. Disney is known for appealing to children of all ages. I was even a big Disney fan when I was a growing up. However, after viewing “Mickey Mouse Monopoly” directed by Miguel Picker, I realize that Disney is not as pure as I used to believe. This film highlighted major problems found in Disney works such as unrealistic female expectations and racial inequality. Disney should look into fixing the problems brought up in the film or face serious backlash from influential movements in today’s society. Disney has created a label for their female characters. This label is that they must be extremely fit and need a man to complete them. That is just not how it is in today’s world.

Everyone has a different shape and size that Disney should adapt into their characters. Having very thin characters influences young girls especially into believing they must look like that if they want to find their prince charming. The film also mentioned that numerous female characters, such as Belle in Beauty and the Beast, take horrendous abuse from male characters. I agree with the film that Disney paints an unrealistic picture that a female should stay with a male abuser in order to help change him. That idea is unacceptable and should not be placed into a young girl’s mind either. With the Me Too movement gaining momentum across the nation, it is no surprise activists spoke out about injustices found in Disney movies.

Actress Kiera Knightley stated, “Cinderella is banned in her home because the titular character “waits around for a rich guy to rescue her” and that The Little Mermaid is also not permissible viewing” (Holmes 2018 Online). This demonstrates how celebrities recognize the flaws that Disney has made in their representation of women. Disney should create strong females that express their femininity yet can hold their own. After discussing the female flaws Disney made, the film focuses on racial issues found in many movies. Disney depicted a misfit Chihuahua with a Spanish accent as a Latino character in The Lady and the Tramp. They also created Siamese cats with slanted eyelids and thick accents to represent Asian characters in the movie as well.

Both of these adaptations fulfill negative stereotypes that should not have been allowed in the first place. This in itself is creating a prejudiced influence on a young child who watches the movie. One author comments on the adaptation of Native Americans in Pocahontas. The author states, “Pocahontas enforces the idea that there are two types of Native American: the noble savage and the violent savage”. This shows how Disney belittles in essence the Native Americans and their culture. Disney also made inappropriate characters that resemble other groups as well. I agree with the film that Disney should not distribute these messages to children because Disney should not be teaching racism to children in any way.

Today, Disney has tried to make up for their shortcomings. They did this by creating a black female character in The Princess and the Frog and a strong female lead in other films such as Brave and Frozen. This may step in the right direction, but more needs to be done to make up for the past faults. Since Disney is able to mold many people’s views, they should do it a responsible manner demonstrating tolerance toward all. “Mickey Mouse Monopoly” directed by Miguel Picker got the message across that Disney has made egregious errors in their films that are not tolerable. I stand with the film that these issues are still seen in society today and something must be done to combat them. It is my hope that Disney steps up to the plate and creates pieces that are for everyone.
