The article, "A Lesson in Flying" by RonNell Jones focused on the benefits the speaker felt she gained from going to law school. She opens her speech by saying she is a disappointment to her family and friends, but the reader quickly learns that is not the case. In saying she is a disappointment, Jones means that she does not know every tiny detail of every law about which her family and friends want advice and answers. The speaker explains that while she doesn't know every detail of every law, she does know just as, if not far more, important: she knows how to think.

Jones explains that through her schooling, she learned to critically analyze situations, make decisions, think on her feet, deal with intense issues, and articulate her viewpoint. These skills are incredibly useful in the community, church, and even in the home. For instance, being able to think on one's feet when a three-year-old is throwing a temper tantrum in Wal-Mart is incredibly useful.

Instead of simply letting the child cry, this skill might help you come up with another solution that will stop the problem not only for that moment, but for future trips to the grocery store as well. Having a law degree not only helps a lawyer find a way to help a wrongly accused person out of jail, it can help the lawyer with her family difficulties at Wal-Mart as well. Jones proved the point that a law degree is universally useful in all different sorts of situations.

As I read this article, I began to really consider the possibility of law school. I always thought that I would follow the path that my uncle led-get a bachelor's degree in political science and then a master's degree in public administration, then ultimately get a job at the state capitol building. This article though, showed me that I could still fulfill my dream of working in the state capitol building, but take a slightly different path than the one I had planned on.

In my patriarchal blessing it mentions that I will have many leadership opportunities. I read somewhere that we should be asking ourselves on a regular basis, "What am I doing to help fulfill my patriarchal blessing?" This article detailed not only the different leadership opportunities a law degree presents, but also the fact that a law degree helps make you a better leader because it gives you essential skills for those positions. While a law degree obviously is not the only option that can prepare you for leadership, it is definitely a good option.

One sentence particularly struck me as I was reading, "It requires you to exercise your intellect in ways you have never before exercised it and rewards you with mental muscle you never dreamed you would have." Exercising my mind as I go throughout my life and making sure that my intellect is always sharp has been a goal of mine for a long time. I've often worried that if I become a stay at home mom, my intellect will fade away because of disuse. This article gave me even more motivation to make sure that doesn't happen. Even if I don't go to law school, I intend to keep my mind sharp through constant reading and learning.

Another sentence in the article states that "...studies consistently indicate that a mother's education level is the single strongest determiner of the literacy, health, and educational success of her children." I agree with this statement whole-heartedly, but I think that just having the education doesn't go far enough. A mother must expand her mind and keep it sharp in order to be able to fully help her children.

Does it help anyone if the mother earned a degree in mathematics but doesn't remember any of what she studied? She wouldn't be able to help her kids with their homework, so they wouldn't appreciate her degree very much. Along with that, the children would see that their mother's education had become obsolete and useless to her, thereby persuading them that a higher education is unnecessary, and thus nullifying at least some of the benefits of having a degree that the sentence mentions.

This article definitely opened up my mind to pursuing a law degree. I hadn't really considered it before, but I think I will give that possibility some thought. I understand now that a law degree has benefits that go far beyond courtroom-benefits that would be incredibly useful in my life. Even if I don't pursue a law degree, I will exercise my intellect, expand my mind, and do my best to not let the degree I do earn to become obsolete as I go throughout my life. I learned a lot of new and interesting things from this article and am now seriously considering a degree in law.
