Theme for English B by Langston Hughes brings to light the struggles faced by colored people in the post-segregation but still a very racist society. The first-person point of view gives the reader an insight on the problems the narrator faces in being the only colored student in an all-white class. The way the poem is structured along with the conversation cues such as the use of “I guess,” makes the poem feel like an internal chain of thought the narrator is trying to make sense of and the reader is just witnessing him go through it. The imagery used in the beginning of the poem describes the long trip he has to take in order to get a decent education. In a time when it was nearly impossible for a colored person to get a decent education in a white-dominated education system, it is admirable to see what he is willing to go through to get an education.

This point of View makes the internal confusion expressed in lines 18-20 seem more human as he struggles to make sense of anything himself.  Racism is a major theme in the poem, in lines 21»24, the narrator names of things that he shares in common with everyone else. He tries to make the connection that they all are human and any differences are just insignificant. The narrator points out that although they may not like it, they are connected and that’s the way it should be. It all goes with the American idea of a Melting Pot, where everyone learns from everyone and they all grow together. To end the poem, it reminds the reader that it was a paper for a class, but it actually served as much more.
