When I decided to transfer my major from Statistics to Accounting, most of my classmates and friends could not understand my choice. In their eyes, moving on to obtain actuary qualifications is a perfect career path upon graduation with a degree in statistics. However, after attending various courses and gathering related information during my first semester in university, I realized that the only reason why I chose statistics was because I enjoyed mathematics.

Actually, besides mathematics and statistics, there were some finance related majors that could also make good use of my quantitative skills. I audited several core courses of accounting and found that I liked accounting more than statistics. Although statistics and accounting both deal with figures, accounting is closely interrelated with modern business world and our daily life. Thus, regardless of others' opposition, I insisted on my choice and transferred to accounting. After 2 years' study in accounting, my understanding of accounting has been deepened and I can get more enjoyment out of this major. I am glad that I made a right decision three years ago.

I enjoy accounting because it combines my strengths and interests perfectly. On one hand, I had the chance to develop advanced mathematical skills through courses such as Calculus and Linear Algebra. Working with arithmetic, calculations, and logic is always my strength. On the other hand, study of the core curriculum has equipped me with solid theoretical knowledge in accounting. These courses also helped to cultivate my research ability. For example, for the course of Financial Analysis, I completed a financial analysis report of China Shipping Development Co. Ltd.

In this report, I analyzed the company's profitability, liquidity & solvency and assessed its operating prospects using its financial statements for 8 consecutive years. For another course project, which involved research on Hangzhou real estate industry, I independently looked into financial statements of five companies. And in Hangzhou Inter-College Case Study Competition, I led my team to successfully carry out a project and won the 2nd prize among 20 teams. My efforts helped me to win many honors. For example, I have been granted 3rd Prize Scholarship twice for my excellent academic performance.

In addition to book knowledge acquired from class, I grasped every opportunity to put what I learned in class into solving practical problems. For the last two summer vacations, I joined Shenzhen Development Bank and Pan-China CPA Limited as interns. Through these two experiences, I tasted the excitement of being a professional in the business world and the happiness of working with others.

My first professional experience was in the accounting department of Shenzhen Development Bank. As the Assistant Accountant, every day I needed to prepare cash report, closely watch checks between banks and verify vouchers. Two months' internship familiarized me with the accounting job in a bank. Although the tasks of each day were somewhat similar, instead of simple repetition, we might come across new problems at each moment. If we became bored of work and lost our vigilance, we were inclined to make mistakes even though the task was rather easy. There was an incident that another intern in my department accidently destroyed an original copy of bank's acceptance bill.

Luckily, when double checked, the mentor noticed this serious mistake and an accounting incident was avoided. As accounting students, we are told to keep blank vouchers in class, but when we encounter similar situations as those described in book in a real working environment, we simply forget it. I drew a lesson from this incident and have since kept reminding myself to be more careful in future work. During my internship, I also communicated with many bank staff and found out many of them are not graduates of accounting or finance. Through self-learning and accumulation, they have acquired profound professional knowledge. These diligent professionals have taught me that it is important to retain a self-learning attitude.

This summer, I interned in the Auditing Department of Pan-China CPA Limited and therefore had the chance to experience a different accountant working environment. Under the guidance of project manager, I read many auditing reports and assisted in financial statement analysis, bank confirmation letter compilation and checking. When I was preparing confirmation letters, I noticed that the address list provided by our client was incomplete and many postal codes were incorrect, so I rechecked them one by one. Four weeks later after sending out these confirmation letters, I only received about half response letters. Thus, I contacted the companies which didn't respond and asked them to send back the confirmation letters.

After talking with some auditors of the project and observing their way of working, I redefined my understanding of patience. I came to the understanding that as an accounting professional, not only does he need patience to deal with complicated reports; but more importantly, he also needs patience to communicate with clients. It is common for auditors to spend a lot of time sifting through piles of vouchers and clarifying auditing process with clients who fail to provide useful materials due to their lack of accounting knowledge. When facing this situation, it is time for auditors to communicate with clients in order to get needed materials.

Aside from school works and internships mentioned above, I have worked as the anchor and editor of financial news in the university student radio station for two years in my spare time. Each week I spent much time in reading both domestic and foreign financial news. During this process, I had the opportunity to learn much knowledge on finance, which broadened my vision and provided me with a brand- new angle to accounting topics.

Throughout my undergraduate years, I have participated in many debating contests. As a debater, I have learnt to be able to perceive the same issue from both aspects and this experience has turned me into a detail-oriented and thorough person. The debating contests also helped me form a habit of conscientious introspection of academic study and professional work because I know that even a small mistake could cause severe problems to real accounting work.

I believe accountant is the perfect occupation for me and decide to be a professional accountant. My short plan is to become an auditor in an international accounting firm. After several years' work, I want to join a consulting firm and work as financial consultant. Now I am applying for xxx universities and aspiring to get advanced training in accounting. I am sure that advanced education in accounting provided by your program will help me achieve my career goal. I am confident that my education, professional experience and my personal characteristics as a whole will contribute a lot to my future career success.
