The two books Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat and New Moon by Stephanie Meyers both have things in common, wolfs. Even though they are both about wolfs they also have a lot of things that are different. The way that both Mowat and Bella have courage for wolfs and how they have fear but soon overcome it is the highlight of the books. In Never Cry Wolf and New Moon the wolves are portrayed as very powerful animals in different ways. “The wolf is a savage, powerful killer. It is one of the most feared and hated animals known to man, and with excellent reason” (Mowat).

They were portrayed as beasts in Mowat, but in Meyers they are almost like a goddess of power. “Again, they reminded me of brothers, quadruplets. Something about the way they moved almost in synchronization to stand across the road from us, the way they all had the same long, round muscles under the same red-brown skin, the same cropped black hair, and the way their expressions altered at exactly the same moment. (Meyers). They both are shown as having human traits but in different ways due to one being a wolf and the other a werewolf. “Once you cared about a person, it was impossible to be logical about them anymore. Jacob was my friend whether he killed people or not.

And I didn’t know what I was going to do about that. ” (Meyers). While in Never Cry Wolf the wolves acted as if they were human. “They appeared to be quite relaxed and comfortable, as if they had been sitting there behind my back for hours. The big male seemed a trifle bored; but the female’s gaze was fixed on me with what I took to be an expression of unabashed and even prurient curiosity. ” (Mowat). No matter how people look at wolves they always look like a killing machine but these selections show that they are humanly nice too.

In the books Bella and Mowat both are scared of the wolves/werewolves but learn to overcome their fear with courage. “I was very thoughtful for the balance of the day, and there were moments when I wondered if my hopes of gaining the confidence of the wolves might not be overly optimistic. As to demonstrating that I bore them no ill will-this I felt would be easy enough to do, but would be of little value unless the wolves felt like reciprocating. ”(Mowat). Bella is in fear of losing her friend through the werewolf but Mowat is fearing the big dangerous wolves. “I understood now what he’d said last night- that I might not want to see him again- and I could have called him as he’d suggested, but that felt cowardly. I owed him a face-to-face conversation, at least.

I would tell him to his face that I couldn’t just overlook what was going on.I couldn’t be friends with a killer and say nothing, let the killing continue… That would make me a monster, too. ”(Meyers). By the end of selections both Mowat and Bella have gotten over their fears and gained courage that the beasts are of innocence and not mass destruction. “You really, honestly don’t mind that I morph into a giant dog? ” he asked, his voice joyful in my ear. “No,” I gasped. “Can’t-breathe-Jake! ” He let me go, but took both hands.

“I’m not a killer, Bella. ”(Meyers).Bella has learned that even though Jacob is a werewolf, he is still her friend. The fear of him being a werewolf is not enough to ruin their friendship. “I had wrestled with my devils and I had won. I had made my decision that, from this hour onward, I would go open-minded into the lupine world and learn to see and know the wolves, not for what they were supposed to be, but for what they actually were” (Mowat) Mowat has realized that the wolves are kind and let his courage like over just like Bella realized in New Moon. The novels New Moon and Never Cry Wolf are full of many similarities and differences.

I thought these were the most important compare and contrast topics to me. The wolves are all monsters but deep down they all have a nice hearted human side to them that we never get to see, but in these books Meyers and Mowat has showed examples of them. Even Bella and Mowat realize the fear of the wolves and werewolves is nothing to the friendship that you can have with them
