What is Life of Pi summary?
The novel begins with the narrator, Pi, describing how he was born in Pondicherry, India in a zoo run by his father. His father named him Piscine Molitor Patel after a Parisian swimming pool. As a child, Pi was fascinated by religion and believed in all of them, eventually finding solace in Hinduism. When he was sixteen, his family decided to move to Canada and sold the zoo animals. The ship carrying the animals sank and Pi was the only human survivor, stranded on a lifeboat with a hyena, an orangutan, a zebra with a broken leg, and a Bengal tiger. The tiger, Richard Parker, killed the hyena and the orangutan, and Pi was forced to share the lifeboat with him. Pi learned how to fish and catch rainwater to survive, and the two developed a strange bond. After 227 days adrift, they landed on an island where Pi built a shelter and hunted for food. One day, Richard Parker left the island, never to be seen again. Pi was eventually rescued and spent the next few months in a hospital recovering. The novel concludes with Pi telling his story to two Japanese investigators who are looking into the sinking of the ship. Pi tells them that he doesn’t know what happened to the other survivors and doesn’t want to know.
