BBC News stands for British Broadcasting Corporation and it is liable for collecting and broadcasting the latest top stories. BBC News overall is the words largest broadcasting news department in the world. Since 2015, Frans Unsworth is the CEO of BBC. The BBC has three main goals which are to update, educate and entertain the viewers. As with all leading media channels, BBC has been argued to use political bias throughout the political spectrum. But also, is argued to have many of its viewers because of their non-prejudice policy. BBC originated in the United Kingdom but airs as well in many other countries including the United States.

BBC is a free news channel in the United Kingdom. In 1927 BBC was airing off the radio, they royal charter in the UK agreed to air BBC news but under specific arrangements on what could and could not be aired. November 2 1936, was the beginning of BBCs television news broadcasts and they continue to air on television till this day. BBC News portrays news programs and documentaries and is obligated by the royal charter to not have any political or commercial influence.

However, if these rules are followed is often questioned. “The BBC's Editorial Guidelines on Politics and Public Policy state that whilst the voices and opinions of opposition parties must be routinely aired and challenged, the government of the day will often be the primary source of news.” (BBC, 2019). BBC is frequently suspected by the government of bias and of being particularly bias and in favor throughout times of war. “The BBC is repeatedly being blamed by the UK government, or by strong supporters of British military campaigns, of being overly sympathetic to the view of the enemy.” (Mark Curtis, BBC Television). However, numerous debate that this is competitors simply making up rumors and that BBC actually is the most trusted news scouse out there and their license fee only makes sure to keep it that way for the audience.

Having to pay a license fee to watch a television program has not always been liked by the audience. The audience argues that they should not have to pay for honest news however, households do hold some advantages by paying for the license fee. The BBC does not show any commercial advertisements on their channels which is a huge advantage for them since people do not like commercials. Since the channels on BBC do not depend on the advertisements to supply their channels, and this gives a feeling of honesty from The BBC and the viewers sense that, especially since The BBC is not prejudiced to citizens or about government news (BBC, 2004) and therefore viewers prefer their news source to be the BBC despite some rumors of political bias.

Currently, The BBC controls numerous television channels. Including, BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Four, BBC Parliament, BBC News, and children’s channels. As of February 2016, linear television channels stopped broadcasting BBC Three and it is now an online internet channel. The other channels are all free for viewers to watch.

The BBC America still holds many television viewers, as of 2015, “up to about 78 million households in the United States have BBC. That is 63 percent of television subscribing customers”. (Heilmann, 2015). Unlike in the United Kingdom, people must pay for their BBC channels here in the U.S. And do feature commercial advertisements as well as subscription fees, unlike in the United Kingdom. BBC America does not receive any funding from the license fee, which in the United Kingdom is the main source of funding. BBC America is owned by both BBC Studios in England and by AMC Networks.

BBC America first was publicized on television March 29 1998. it included comedy shows and movies, many popular dramas from the UK and lifestyle programs. Early on, popular shows such as, Ground Force that was originally British was being watched by many Americans. A lot of these channels showed popular British shows but to no surprise, got many views in American households as well. As for the newer content, it is mainly being shown on BBC Americas evening schedule.

All in all, the BBC started out as a small radio broadcast in the 1930s and today it is the highest viewer count news channel in the world. Competitors will always try to compete with The BBC because of the way BBC presents the public to trust in its honest and non-prejudice broadcasting. Even though there have been many beliefs to BBC not being honest and actually being very prejudice in their news reports. This continues to be argued and BBC also still continues to have many loyal viewers all around the world.
