An Argument Against Gun Control in the United States

One of the biggest issues in the United States that I would change is gun control. The government is slowly chipping away at our constitutional right to keep and bear arms. This action puzzles me because I do not see why this is happening. Gun control is based on the faulty notion that ordinary citizens are too hazardous and to ill tempered to be trusted with weapons. Only through the slight alterations of specific constitutional rights is gun control even possible. Every year the U.S. takes away from our constitutional right but it cannot see that it is only hurting itself. I believe that one day, if things do not change, we will not have the right to keep and bare arms. Today I would like to you to question the choices your government has or will make for you.

It is true that people die every year from the wounds of a gun shot but that is no reason to do away with guns all together. In 1986, a questionnaire was sent to every police station in Idaho and it produced the following results: 97 percent believed that a ban of firearms ownership would not reduce crime or keep criminals from using guns, 89 percent believed that the current laws had no effect on criminals and 90 percent also believed that if firearm ownership were banned it would only make the ordinary citizens more likely to become targets of armed violence. The fact is that violence and crime are linked with collapsing educational standards, increasing delinquency, and a deteriorating society worldwide. Guns do not tum ordinary citizens into murderers. Less than one gun owner in 3,000 commits a homicide or assault. Those who commit these acts are far from a typical gun owner. A study found that four-fifths of offenders have prior arrest records, and usually other charges of felonies. This is ironic considering it is unlawful for felons to even possess a firearm.

Gun control, by any means, doesn't solve our problems of violence so lets take a look at why we need guns. Besides the use of guns for sport and recreation we need guns to protect ourselves. Evidence shows that civilian gun ownership can be a powerful deterrent to crime. In 1966 the police in Orlando, Florida, responded to a rape epidemic by drafting a highly publicized program to train 2,500 women in firearm use. The next year rape fell by 88 percent, and burglary dropped 25 percent. In March 1982 Kennesaw, Georgia enacted a law requiring members of each household to keep a gun at home; house burglaries fell from 65 per year to 26 and on down to 11 the following year. These figures are very convincing in proving the positive side of a gun in the right hands. Even though actions like these produced such desirable results, the US has pulled a U turn and gone in the other direction.

In conclusion I would like to remind you that the ones who need gun control, mostly thieves, rapists and murderers, can get guns so why shouldn't you. A gun may be the only thing that stands between a criminals intentions and a loved one so I suggest that one day when the question of gun control comes about you will think clearly and make a decision based upon the positive side of this constitutional right.
