A Literary Analysis of a Quote by James Madison

"In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place to oblige to control itself" (James Madison). This statement from James Madison came from The Federalist paper number 51. This statement made by him because this is the beginning of the U.S. government. This quote was made because Madison had a vision of what the government would be like. There were many ideas that come to mind when it comes to the success of the goverment. In the first section of the quote, Madison states, "In framing a government which is to be administered by men over me", he talks about the Bill of Rights.

The Bill of Rights was created as basic individual rights guaranteed to citizens that are issued in the first ten amendments of the U.S. Constitution. Created by the founding fathers, the Bill of Rights limited the national government's power, which allowed individuals to work alone when the rights were broken. The Bill of Rights would relate to this quote because goal is to allow citizens to be governed and take control, not the government taking control. Madison then states, "you must first enable the government to control the govermed", he talks about how citizens need help and guidance in order to get to the goal. The founding fathers believed in a federal system that would protect liberty, encourage innovation, and spread power. Federalism is the only legal source of authority in the constitution for both state and national governments. This federal system would be useful to the citizens because it would allow them to adjust to any mistake and problem that occurs. This system wouldn't allow citizens to take advantage of their own independent power.

Federalism was an experiment for the government to solve problems. This allows the government to adjust to any occurring problems that come. This federal system is beneficial because it allows government officials to constantly fight for a position. By fighting for a postion, new people are getting a chance to change the govemment and they can bring a new perspective. Federalism would be key in this quote because citizens got equal representation in both state and local governments. In conclusion, before reaching the goals, the key point would have to be the government controlling itself. In order to be the ideal government, they have to be able to control themselves. One way the government has done that would be the separation of powers and checks and balances. Separation of powers was created to place intermal controls on t national government's power by creating the legislative, executive, and judicial branches.

Checks and balances was a way for the three branches to work together by creating laws and passing bills. Both the speartion of powers and checks and balances limited the governments power beause now they can't pass law as easy as they thought. This would be the final piece that would make it an ideal government. Even though this isn't the perfect government, it is constantly improving in order to become the ideal government that James Madison talkS about. The govemment is always improving by creating new systems that helps them and the citizens.
