It is safe to say that nearly everyone is on social media. Many log onto a popular website such as Facebook and not think twice while doing so. Social media has a great power of bringing people together—even bringing people all over the world onto one screen. This power however, is actually very limited. Social media in today’s society may be considered a good way to communicate, but this form of communication should not be substituted for real life interaction. Social media, according to much of society, is considered a way to personally connect with one another but the reality of social media suggests that this is not the case.
Social media such as Facebook does have positive advantages of connecting people around the world and providing useful information. While using Facebook, it is common to scroll through the “news feed” and see what is “trending”. Things on a news feed vary from pictures of last night’s dinner, to a heated political debate hosted by a friend’s weird uncle from Nevada. This site can be happy such as another compilation of funny cat falls, and it also has the power to be sad and talk about things that hit close to home. Not only is social media a website where one is able to stay up to date with college friends who move away for the summer, but it is also a good source of what to expect for the local weather that day. There is a lot of good that comes from social media—and what social media does not seem to lack is its growing numbers of online users.

Those who decide to use social media will sacrifice in-person time with friends and family for “social” time on his or her computer. Nearly everyone in the world has heard of social media in one way or another, and some even chose to stay away from it altogether. Those that do choose to be on social media exploit themselves to everything described previously in this essay. Those that choose the social media life have the power to spend hours on their own devices through the use of cell phones or computers or another wireless device. This time spent “socializing” is usually done at home, at work, at school. Actually, it happens everywhere. Because of the advancements in technology social media is accessible around the clock and usually as convenient as the users’ pocket. Because of this convenience, many use a phone screen to avoid communicating with others, and this seems to be the opposite of socializing in its truest sense.
Gatherings of friends and families are special times to make memories with one another, and more importantly, share time together. These gatherings are a blessing to those who are a part of them; however, social media has its own way of splitting up such social gatherings. A group of friends may have the opportunity to spend some time with one another. This gathering might be comprised of just talking or even playing some sort of game. And one of the friends thinks of a great idea to “share” what they are doing with his or her own Facebook community.
Instead of that friend continuing to be mentally present with the group of friends he or she grabs the phone from their pocket and proceeds to type about the great night they are having and maybe even organize for the group to stop what they are doing to take a photo. Even though it may seem like a great idea and actions such as this have come to be a generally accepted thing to do, the memories made and quality time spent in person is much more meaningful than posting a photo, status, or check-in of the event.
Social media does have great power in regards to sharing messages and getting points across to an audience around the globe. What social media lacks, however, is the feeling of a true personal relationship. While there may be circumstantial advantages to staying connected over the web, there truly is no substitute for real life interaction.
