Sportsmanship is defined as fairness in following the rules of the game, which includes the participant, parents, coaches, and spectators. We all aim for greatness in athletics by stretching the limits, and by going to great lengths for that victory. Sometimes we even forget about sportsmanship.

Who you are isn't defined by what's on the scoreboard at the end of the game, how you handle it truly defines you. Spotsmanship matters, and shows your character, attitude, and love for your sport. Good spotsmanship is the key to success in athletics. When the teammates, opponents, coaches, and officials treat each other with respect, it makes the games more enjoyable to watch. It also sets examples for young kids to see and hopefully act in the right way. To me, sportsmanship is about your character and having a good work ethnic, to do your best for yourself and team. It is taking responsibility without excuses, doing the right thing, winning with class and losing with dignity, and most importantly supporting your teammates and even opponents.

A good sport is a well-rounded person, with good intentions, and considerate of others. Considering others and not making it all about you, will get you farther than you know. Being on a team will teach someone it's about everyone, and coming together to reach a goal. If the team doesn't reach the goal, it's important to remember you win as a team and lose as a team. This concept is difficult to learn and can take maturing and growing up to understand, which will come with being a good sport. Another part of sportsmanship is having a sense of humor. Being serious all the time and intense takes way from the game. It's all about having fun, being friendly, and fun to be around. Sometimes we lose sight of sportsmanship because of what's at stake, or because of our own egos. Seeing others fail doesn't support your own team, and doesn't make you succeed.

For example, I am a Kentucky basketball fan and it seems like other fan bases like to degrade Kentucky more than they like their own team. The fan bases of college basketball teams have become horrible sports. One team will win and the other will lose, but the way you handle it, is the more important outcome. Watching a sporting event is more fun when the opponents show respect and good sportsmanship for each other. Sports give athletes the opportunity to learn good sportsmanship on and off the field. Like myself, I have been fortunate and blessed to have coaches and supporters to help guide me to succeed athletically and personally. Through sports I have learned the importance of good sportsmanship, and strive to be the best I can be. The thrill and excitement of victory is momentarily, but the respect earned through sportsmanship last for forever. Sports journalist Grant land Rice said, "it's not that you won or lost but how you played the game."
