Stem cells are unspecialized cells that have the capabilities of developing into any of the different types of cells that are in the human body. It is for this reason that scientists are trying to study and use them for their search of cures for different ailments that are as of now detrimental to the human body. The problem with this study is that in the research process the embryo which the stem cells came from is destroyed.

The laws for the United States restrict the use of stem cells in research saying that it is ethically wrong and that the process kills a life. However, other countries do not have the same standards and are going forward in this area of study. These are some of the discoveries that have been made in other countries in the last 6 years. Australians claim to have gotten adult stem cells to develop into different tissues, which was new since it was previously thought that only embryonic stem cells could make the changes.

Other countries have tried to get around the ethics problem by using embryos that were thrown away after “genetic screening tests in fertility treatments.” South Korea avoided harvesting lots of embryos and just cloned embryos for their studies which borders on another ethical issue which was not addressed. However, through their cloning they were able to produce identical stem-cell lines to the human donors.

God designed us in His image which means that we have an innate desire to create new and marvelous wonders. However, we are bordering on trying to make ourselves gods when we try to control human life so tightly. The idea of taking embryos which would someday develop into a beautiful human and tearing it apart should be appalling to any Christian if we truly believe that God knows us from before we were in the womb. And the thought of cloning one of God’s perfect designs and trying to make two that are exactly the same, when God designed us all differently, should also sicken us Christians. These two topics have been studied and discussed for quite a few years now and Christians have always come on these sides of the discussions, but there is a new part to it now.

The stem cells from adult bone marrow can be used without killing any embryos are a different story. The ethical dilemma of killing an embryo is gone, so what is to make this any different from taking a Tylenol or Ibuprofen to help heal a headache? We as Christians must decide where the line is that gives us too much control over our lives. Does this new ability make us too much like God, or is it just another amazing discovery that we don’t think anything of using like an Aspirin? Based on this information 1 would personally stand in favor of exploring the use of adult human stem cells for research with the hope that we can find cures for diseases, find ways to heal amputated limbs, and regrow skin on burn victims.
