Hawthorne reveals that Dimmesdale's psychological state has been abased by the pain that he endures with his personal ' Scarlet Letter '. Hawthorne states ' A knowledge of men's hearts will be needful to the completest solution of that problem. ' ( Hawthorne pg. 123 ) In order to resolve this ' problem ', Dimmesdale would need a clear and steady mind, which he does not have, due to his current apprehensive outlook. Although a highly respected minister, the clash between his heart and mind ties into the struggle of his psychological state.

Pearl is brought down by the mistake her mother had made, and she will have to face the consequences of that aberration. Pearl having a care free and devilish spirit, hides well her true feelings beneath. In the text, Pearl states ' Doth he love us? Looking up with acute intelligence into her mother's face. 'Will he go back with us, hand in hand, we three together, into the town?' ( Hawthorne Ch. 19 ) As the innocence in Peal begins to show, her true feelings are being portrayed to Hester, wanting to finally have a father. While still being young, her heart is being broken deeply knowing that her love for Dimmesdale will remain in the shadows. In conclusion, Pearl will grow up knowing that she was born as a sin, which will damage her permantely.

Hester's cognitive state has been prostrated by the judgement she has encountered with the people and also Chillingworth. While still bearing the pain and judgement of her sin, her mind is being bashed with the struggle of being able to redeem herself in multiple ways. Hawthorne states ' Standing alone on the scaffold as punishment for her adulterous behavior. ' ( Hawthorne Ch. 2 ) Although the A has been removed, the lingering sensation of judgement has not been erased. Further more, the Scarlet Letter has brought back the pain she has wished to forget. Although this Puritanical society is separated by age, class, and gender, judgement and pain can be overturned into their psychological standing. Downfalls and triumphs can ease the heart only if public consequences are given.
