The article “Is It Important to Examine Crime Trends at a Local ‘Micro’ Level? A Longitudinal Analysis of Street to Street Variability in Crime Trajectories” by Elizabeth Groff, David Weisburd and Sue-Ming Yang looked at the significance of the study they did at the local micro level because it gave them more detailed on the crime trends that were happening street by street. The city they looked at was Seattle Washington. They also correlated 16 years of crime incident data that was collected. They focused on their research crime at a street level. They looked at neighborhoods and would put them in groups. Where they would consider some parts of the neighborhood safe, and some weren’t.

According to the article, “Variation in crime within communities is probably greater than variations across communities.” (Groff, Weisburd, & Yang, 2010). The authors are trying to say that crimes trends to happen within the same community. In a way, people are victimizing their people. In the article when they are looking at the neighborhoods in a micro level, they are not looking at them as a homogenous because that will bring a different result in the data they collected because that would look at the community as individuals basically will focus on their education and their ethnic and other information. They are looking at the neighborhood as intra- neighborhood.

According to the article, the results also showed a correlation in “hot spots” where crime would tend to happen or how far away from the hot spots where policing takes place a crime happens. They look at all crimes that were reported. This study helps police notice where were the safe streets and the streets that were more at risk of crime. The two criminological theories that I chose regarding the crime trends at their current rate are social structure theory and the social reaction labeling theory. The reason I chose these two theories because when I was reading the articles the way, they broke down the neighborhoods and rated which area had more crimes it made me think of the people who live in those neighborhoods.

As to why only certain areas had higher crimes than other streets; even when they are in the same neighborhood. Social structure theory according to Seigel is “the view that a disadvantaged economic class position is a primary cause of crime” (Seigel, 2015). It looks at a person economic and social class, and from that, you can see the risk of the individual is more likely to commit a crime. Social disorganization theory is one of the links to social structure theory, and the theory states that a person is more likely to commit a crime because the social relation is broken and the environment in which they live isn’t the best. The reason I believe social disorganization theory goes along with the rates the crime trends are right now because if you look in the article, they focused on the particular areas and where they saw more crimes were happening it tends to stay around the same area.

If you look at it, the people who are in that dangerous neighbor were more likely to commit a crime since they do not have those social relationships with their community. Social reaction labeling theory According to Seigel “The view that people become criminals when significant members of society label them as such and they except those labels as a personal identity” (Seigel, 2015). People are influenced by society, and according to this theory, the people take the label society gives to them and makes it their identity. For example, if you say a particular neighborhood is more prone to violence and crimes. The people living in their neighborhood are more likely to commit crimes. Take that as their identity because we are labeling their neighborhood as a high crime area. This theory goes with the rates the crime trends right now because like I stated before the people who live in certain areas start to notice that crime is happening in their neighborhood.

They are being labeled as one of the bad neighborhoods most of the people who are not in that particular neighborhood would see the people who live there as all the same. In the article, it shows that placing characteristics also play a significant part to the evidence they gathered from each neighborhood. The significant components of the classical school of criminal calcination can address that affirmation crime trend is Social theories of crime. Sociological theories suggest that crimes were the consequence of immorality, the thought of the lack of social norms, the need of being connected to society. Sociologist uses the term to distinguish the separation of the person from the collective morality or the guilt resulting from the lack of chance to attain their dreams or by learning of criminal values.

The guilt results from the failure to properly educate people and by unequal opportunities between groups. These sociological possibilities of crime are different, and they are primarily part of crime causation. Criminality is a product of society's impact on an individual. Community and the criminal sense within the community are often seen as a conflict of norms and beliefs among different socialized groups. Although unlike genetics and psychological trades inherits by ancestors one gets an option at which situation he or she chooses to live.
