CENTRAL IDEA/THESIS: Hangovers are the worst to deal with especially after maybe drinking too much the night before at a party. There are a few foods that are linked to being able to relieve and cure the horrid symptoms of a hangover.

GET ATTENTION: I can vouch for most that after a long week with studies and exams the best way to wind down and get the weekend started is by either going to happy hour or drinking an entire bottle of wine.

CLEARLY REVEAL TOPIC: Every hangover is going to be different it may be a small one that includes a minor headache or a major one that includes vomiting, dizziness, and sensitivity to light and sound. Today I am going to provide different foods to kick that hangovers butt and get you feeling better in no time.

LISTENER RELEVANCE: We all tell ourselves before a night of partying or drinking that we are only going to have ½ cups or 3 shots max, but then our friends start encouraging us to take “1” more shot or just hand you another cup and now everyone’s yelling “CHUG, CHUG, CHUG” and next thing you know your own your 10th shot and also on your spine. When you wake up the next morning your stuck trying to figure out how you even got in the bed or even home, but the most important thing you notice is that you have a bad-ass hangover and are now wishing you never drank that much, but I am here to share a few foods that help you get back in order and will soon be your go-to foods as well.

ESTABLISH CREDIBILITY: I have had my fair share of bad hangovers and have developed 3 categories of foods to relative and cure a hangover within the day, and with the help of research these foods in the category have multiple benefits for the body during those times of recovery.

Transition: To begin with, fruits are going to replenish the body with electrolytes, water and other nutrients lost from drinking.

MAIN POINT: The main effect of drinking leads to lose of important nutrients in the body like water which leads to dehydration. Water and electrolytes go hand in hand to help the body with cellular function and are needed to prevent symptoms of headaches and fatigue. Fruits are filled with the main properties needed to replenish those nutrients lost. These fruits able to unlock the blockage the productions of potassium, antioxidants and glutathione.

Bananas and blueberries build electrolytes and fights nausea (vomiting) because they are filled with potassium and antioxidants.

Bananas are filled potassium, which is an electrolyte lost because of diuretic effect. The production of potassium being blocked makes the body lose water from frequent urination, which causes headaches. Bananas have been proven to reduce symptoms by 50% from Annals of Nutrition (2004).

Blueberries are rich in nutrients to fight inflammation, increase antioxidants, and boost immune system. With the increase of antioxidants in the body from blueberries the waves of nausea will soon be gone and so will the damaged cells from drinking, therefor it will also boost your immune system to fight any flu/cold like symptoms experienced.

Watermelon and oranges are known to help rehydrate the body and provides vitamin C.

Watermelon is rich in water which helps the body rehydrate from being dehydrated due to frequent urination. It also detoxes the liver from toxins in alcohol. If you are prone to getting headaches during this time watermelon will help increase the blood flow to brain and decrease the intensity of the headache.

Oranges are rich in vitamin C which makes glutathione, glutathione is used to help the body get rid of alcohol and stabilize the levels after being thrown off. No this is not the same as drinking orange juice, you can enjoy some cuties or a cut up a whole orange and eat it through out the day till you feel better.

Transition/Connective: However, fruits aren’t the only thing beneficial for a hangover. Starchy carbs also come in handy if you aren’t a big fan of fruits or want to eat something heavier.

Eating starchy carbs is going to increase low blood sugar from drinking with no little to no food, hence that’s why its important to eat before drinking because it can prevent vomiting while drinking and after. Carbs will help ease your stomach, soak up any acid in the stomach and get your digestive system moving to eliminate acetaldehyde toxins. Carbs that are good to eat would be eggs and oatmeal.

Eggs are the almost perfect remedy for a hangover because it attacks the hangover creator.

Eggs break down the hangover toxin acetaldehyde in the liver. When the liver breaks down all the ethanol, acetaldehyde is leftover and that’s what mainly causes hangovers to form. Watch your body produce more glutathione and kill off the toxins and that hangover fade away.

In the morning, whip up some eggs, go to waffle house, or pick up an egg sandwich on some toast/bread, which is also important you can either eat your eggs alone or add some meat like bacon or add toast to keep your stomach settled.

Everyone eats oatmeal, it’s like a quick breakfast before class.

Oatmeal is a superfood therefore, it contains vitamin B, iron, grains and calcium all in which can help get your digestive system pumping, to help your blood sugar levels regulate while also giving you an energy boost.

Because of the amount of fiber in oatmeal, it is said that it “If you have type 2 diabetes, oatmeal improves your insulin sensitivity to help those blood sugar spikes.” (Healthline, 2016)

Transition/Connective: In addition, to the benefits of fruits and starchy carbs soups also have a powerful benefit of restocking sodium levels

Chicken noodle soup and miso soup are the top 2 soups needed to restock low sodium levels after drinking. Low sodium levels cause hyponatremia, which increases vomiting, dehydration, and fatigue. Why do we need starchy carbs though? Because from Nutrition.org/UK they say, “Starchy foods can provide us with fiber that is good for our digestive health, lowers heart disease, and fights type 2 diabetes.”

Chicken noodle soup seems to be a very known remedy for everything and yes, a hangover is one of them. With the sodium levels in the soup it can help rehydrate the body with sodium and water as well, add vegetables to make it healthier and include more benefits.

Miso soup aids in digestion but be careful because it is high in salt and should be eaten in moderation. Miso soups contains nutrients that are good for the stomach because of probiotics and bacteria and that aids in relieving fatigue.
