Identity Essay Examples

The complexity of our identity is so hard to find, but factors such as physical appearance, perception from others, and how one sees oneself can give it meaning. Identity is the perception one has of the world and characteristics that make a person unique and distinguishable from others.

Physical Appearance is one of the categories that define identity. External factors are the first and lasting impression we leave with everyone we meet. Fashion Style is how we express ourselves through clothing. It is a showcase of individuality; an individual's fashion gives their general surroundings a thought of what their identity is, or who they are attempting to turn into. Adjusting various styles and making them into something individual is key in making your character. Physical features, skin color, and facial features all contribute to one's identity. These characteristics remain with us because we are born with them.

Often, two people will look alike but come from different nations. We can identify others through similar characteristics of other nations, all the way down to the DNA in fingerprints. Although minor in physical appearance, traits within our personality allow uniqueness. Traits such as introversion, arrogance, or persistence define who we are to ourselves and others.

The perception of others is another significant factor in one's identity. When an individual gets misunderstood, society tends to try and place them in boxes it created or “stereotypes” as we know them. Stereotypes are the characteristic reflex when we attempt to comprehend others. Even though the intent of stereotyping is usually to identify people with what we are familiar with, it makes us ignore the distinctive aspect between individuals and make generalizations. Perceived identity from others influences one's identity or identities rather. One might want to appear “cool” and “trendy” to shape the identity they want to be perceived, but around others, they are their true selves. This shows how the perception of others can make one want to relate or distinguish themselves from others. It is also to note, different perceptions from family members shape our identity through the values and expectations instilled in us. Children and teens are greatly affected by these perceptions. For instance, if a child's parent accepts that school is significant, at that point their children will pay attention in class. However, if a child's parents do not care about how their child does in school, the child feels the same. The equivalent goes for the parent's opinions and judgments. A parent that has certain supremacist or bias views causes their children to have those same views. Once growing up getting taught certain ways, it is unlikely those ways are to change in adulthood.

How one sees their self is the most important part of one's identity. Our identity is based on our beliefs, values, or sexuality. Self-awareness is how we perceive ourselves, both physically and mentally. Identifying the traits that make us unique or monitoring our emotional wellness are examples. Self-awareness is important because it allows us to understand what makes our identity. Personal beliefs affect one because it shows the standards we live by and make choices with. These beliefs shape identity. Disregarding whether those beliefs are moral or not, an individual will follow those beliefs to avoid disturbance of them. A person that believes in God sees the world in his eyes, strictly following the principles and values in the bible. A moral decision is resolving to represent what one accepts is correct and acceptable. It is about what is known by an individual than about characterizing what our identity is. Choices include telling the truth, treating others as one wants to be treated, or taking accountability for actions taken. Similar to personal beliefs, our identity closely correlates with what we believe is right or wrong.

Identity gets defined by one's physical appearance, perception of others, and how one sees oneself. It is the outlook one has on the world and the outlook the world has on one. The individuality we all possess is what makes everyone special.
