Dr. Seuss once said “We are all a little weird and life’s a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it to love” I like that quote because it says that everyone in their own way is weird or an outsider. I also agree with it in saying that everyone is an outsider. No matter what your background is you have been an outsider. In “The Orphan Train” we learn about 3 people, Molly, Jack, and Vivian. They are all outsiders in different ways. First, we meet Vivian. She is an Irish immigrant who was orphaned at age 9 in a house fire. She felt like an outsider because she was Irish in midwestern America. She had fiery red hair, was pale, and had an Irish accent that she felt self-conscious about.

Next, there is Molly a Native American teenager, who has been to so many foster homes she can’t remember all of them. She has also had trouble with the law, for example stealing “Jane Eyre” from her local library. There is also Jack. He is a popular soccer player and is Molly’s boyfriend. Even though at first glance it seems like Jack could fit in anywhere. He still feels like an outsider because his father left his mother, so he could return to the Dominican Republic. Here I show characters from 3 different walks of life. Vivian is an immigrant who is an orphan. Molly a Native American who is also an orphan, and Jack a popular kid whose mom left his dad.

Some people get left out because of their hobbies or appearance. For example, in the movie “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” we meet Rudolph kind reindeer, who no one wants to associate with only because he looks different. We also meet Hermey an elf, who wants to be a dentist. He gets made fun of because of his dream of being a dentist. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” supports my main point because sometimes you could be born in a position that makes you an outsider.

Now some people might say that there are people who could fit in anywhere. To that, I say you could be in a group where you like sports, but everyone else likes theatre. You probably wouldn’t feel as comfortable as you would if you were in a group where everyone shared your interests. In conclusion, I believe that everyone is or has been an outsider because there is always going to be one or two ways that you don’t fit in. I also believe “The Orphan Train” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” were good works of fiction that showed many ways people can be labeled as outsiders.
