A writer who has had a very profound impact on the way I view the world is the late British social commentator Christopher Hitchens. Richard Dawkins once described him as one of the most powerful rhetorical artillery pieces and I fully agree. In my opinion he was the finest orator to have ever lived. Hitchens was a Journalist who didn't worry about who he offended and fought for what he believed in. He saw the dangers and horror of religious fundamentalists and fought to show this to the world. By the time of his passing in 2011, the world had heard him. Many have been persuaded to reconsider their notions that religions are benign. He was devilishly entertaining to listen to and to read. The human brain is said to be the most complicated object in the known universe.
Christopher was living proof of that. He was knowledgeable on a wide variety of topics and always had something worthwhile to say about them. He wrote beautifully and spoke impeccably. Reading his books and listening to him debate led me to where I am today which is being a freethinker and a more enlightened person. The words of Hitchens taught me that a skeptical angle must always be approached to life. It is through him that I learned that one must take the risk of thinking for themselves for more truth, harmony and beauty comes there way that way. He also guided my journey from blind belief to reason and today I remain an avid promoter of reason and skeptic. Hitchens was a beacon of knowledge and light in a world which threatens to extinguish both. He had the courage to and influenced me into accepting the world as what it is and not what we want it to be. He understood and influenced many to the reality which is that the universe does not care about our existence or our welfare and he epitomized the reality that our lives only have meaning to the extent that we give it meaning.
Hitchens was by no means a scientist, yet he often spoke about how science is the future and was fascinated by its beauty. He was wise enough to realize that the Universe is far more imaginative than we are. This writer allowed me to discover remarkable facts about science such as that it is possible to theoretically travel to the future, look at the past and possibly travel to other dimensions in the Universe through wormholes. This helped cultivate my fascination with Astronomy, something which I am still deeply interested in to this day. I admire Hitchens most of all because he was a very social figure, almost accessible to all. There was the obstacle of all the wordiness, both in print and in words. It was an external life. His greatest effort always seemed to be to deliver excellent orations to the public eye. This made him something of an object of curiosity and admiration in a time where more and more writers were losing their platforms.
