The introductory, Nathan McCall had just come home from prison. He went into detail about what he was thinking in the moment and what happened. When he came home, he "wore the consciousness of [his] new freedom like an overcoat" (220). Everything felt surreal for him, it's as if he was in a different time. He was amazed by the computerized scanner at the grocery store. Nathan really felt out of date when he came across his old friend Slick. The old sign for 'wassup' changed dramatically. "When I left the streets, people were doing the Black Power salute. Now they flashing the P-Funk sign. These niggahs gone crazy". Being out of prison Nathan discovered his freedom.
The next day Nathan went "past the 711 to check out the scene" (222). Before this he went to visit his 5-year-old son. Trying to interact with Monroe was tough. Catching up with the guys was a lot easier. He was told about how Scoobie- D was married with kids and works at the shipyard. Also how he "fucked up Frank Watford for pissing him off". Shane asked Nathan is he wanted he wanted to go to the Broadway Club with him Friday night. Nathan knew this moment was going to come. He had to choose if he wanted to go or not go and risk being talked about. So he turned down the offer. His new freedom also came with probation. Right away he resented his Parole Officer. The parole officer laid down the rules he could not: own a firearm, vote, travel outside the immediate area without permission and also had to report to the P.O. once a month. First Nathan had to get a job as a felon.
As Nathan looked for a job he ran into a huge problem 'white people' and the one question he dreaded "Have you ever been convicted a felon?". He didn't understand how he was supposed to get a job if he's a convicted felon. The job searches finally began. He hunted for a job in Norfolk and Portsmouth but had no luck. He began to become very frustrated, so his parents suggested he get away for a while. Washington D.C. was his next job hunt location. There he lived with his father's old Navy family but that didn't last long. After a few weeks he ran out of money and had to return home. "With no money, no car, no apartment [he] began to feel like less of a man, like [he] was a grown child depending on [his] parents" (226).

It didn't take much for Nathan to get into a confrontation with a another gentlemen. The man blatantly disrespected him by slamming the drive thru door in his face and throwing his money into the car, Nathan hotheadedly sped into a parking space. Rushed into the Burger King ready to fight but was soon stopped by the black store manager. Then he left. Shortly after that incident he recalled reading something that said 85 percent of inmates return to prison within five years of being released. He started thinking about that if he went back to prison "it would be for going off on some white person for insulting [him]" (228). Then he realized he needed to get a better grip of what he has been through and where he is now. He was soon tested on whether he would make it or break it.
One night Nathan stopped at a convenience store and to him it was the perfect store to case. "There's no one else here. No customers. No cameras.". He brought his things, walked out and sat in the car. He sat in the car for a long time, thinking and planning how to case it even his route home. Then he thought about his parents. How they never gave up on him and how they have loved him through it all. He couldn't let them down. The knowledge he gained in prison made him the person he is now. He then started the car and drove away.
My opinion on this chapter and how I thought he progressed throughout. This was a great chapter I wouldn't mind reading the book itself. I believe he learned a lot within that short period of time being out of prison. He did start to make me believe that he would fall back into his old ways and go back to prison. Nevertheless, he proved to himself he can keep his composure and stay out of trouble.
