Over the past few weeks we have been doing group simulations where various topics have been discussed such as school stress, self-care, mental health, etc. Going into this I didn't expect much because quite frankly I didn't know what we were supposed to be doing and I didn't get the point of the project. No matter how many times I went over the instructions it didn't make sense and after the very first meeting I felt like this was a waste of time. There were many awkward silences and discussion of confusion and how things were to be done but we power through it.
Along the way we kind of got the hang of things and we set goals and decided each session would build upon each other but not be a continuation of the previous meeting per say. We decided we would always open the floor for people to talk about how they felt or if they needed any advice and the rest of the group could chime in if they had anything to say. Overall, I got a lot more from this than I expected and I got closer to everyone so I feel this simulation was well worth my time.
One application I think we used was the seven-step progression by Robert Salmon and Roselle Kurland (Kurland & Salmon, 1993). One of the members brought up an issue of someone close to them being sick and them being extremely frustrated and upset. As a group we talked and realized they were not mad at the person but more so the situation and the fact that there was nothing they could do to fix it. This close friend was diagnosed with something that would eventually take their life (whether it affects your body quickly or slowly was never specified), this was a hard thing to try to deal with for the member.

The individual who is sick is the same as our age and you never really think it will happen to someone so young, even though you know of these instances you never feel it will happen to someone you know personally. Unfortunately, there were individuals who could relate to this member's situation so they could sympathize and empathize with them. They talked about ways they tried to handle it such as focusing on the time they have left with the person, hanging out with them, not treating them like they have a sickness but being considerate of things they cannot do anymore, etc. They decided to take our advice to heart and utilize it and we let the individual know that we were all there for them if they needed us.
The second application we used was the type of group we were which was a support group (Kurtz, 2004). No matter what the topic we always made sure we supported people and made sure they knew we were there for them. There was a session where everyone talked about the stressors of school, jobs, extra curriculars, and just trying to balance them all. You could tell how draining this was for everyone to talk about but we finally got everyone to speak and feel comfortable enough to do so which I thought was a great accomplishment.
One person mentioned the struggles of balancing school work and a relationship, they had been feeling as if they were neglecting their significant other due to the fact of not spending any time with the for the past few weeks. They were frustrated because they didn't have the time to even really be annoyed with not seeing them because of how much they had to do. For that instance, a few people gave advice of planning an hour into their schedule once a week to hang out with them so they wouldn't drift apart and that they could just relax in each other's presence. We gave her encouraging words about how proud we were that she shared her troubles and that she would be able to balance it all.
In the end, I learned the benefits of going to and being a part of a group where you can share how you feel and people understand you. I found this to be one of my favorite activities for class and am so glad I got to do this with such a great group of people.
