His hand was no longer holding onto mine. My grandfather, the one I always looked up to, was lying lifeless on the floor. It was late in the afternoon on October 7, 2009, when he took his last breath. It started off as a severe cough, and no one understood what was happening. I recall yelling at my brother to dial 911 as I immediately grabbed my grandfather's hands. I could feel his hands beginning to harden and at that moment, I knew he had passed. Just like that, the most influential person in my life was no longer with me.
On that tragic day, I made a promise to commit myself to the world of medicine to compensate for my cluelessness in that moment. Ultimately, I wanted to prevent feeling helpless. At only thirteen, the death of my grandfather served as a central climax and firmly paved the way decision to become a nurse anesthetist. Almost seven years later, I am still working towards that goal. Nurses persevere every day to aid in their patients' health. Through patient interaction, nurses can observe, assess, and evaluate needs. However, the three key features needed to succeed as a nurse are empathy, diligence, and meticulousness all of which I embody.
Empathy is one of the most important mechanisms provided by nurses to communicate with their fellow patients. It is imperative to utilize insight but also understand its barriers within the field. As a caring and responsible individual, I demonstrate my empathetic qualities in a manner that enables me to understand another person on a deeper level; a tactic nurses presently use. Nevertheless, I recognize the barriers to offering empathy. Within the healthcare field, nurses are encouraged to build positive relationships with patients in a professional manner, but also understand the role of erratic circumstances, as promises are unfavorable.

Reflecting on my grandfather's unforeseen death, I gained diligence in desiring to follow the path of healthcare as a future nurse. As a thirteen year old, I was unsure of my future and the ultimate career I would choose, but after my grandfather's death there was no questioning where my decision stood. Following his mourning, I persevered and gained insight on the individual I was destined to be. In the field of nursing, nurses ensure the ability to complete tasks in an efficient manner and attempt to exceed expectations through their dedication to the patients and coworkers around them. Regardless of previous obstacles, nurses choose to overcome difficult times rather than hinder due to its effects.
The classes I have taken while at Georgia State University and the skills I possess on account of those courses assure my ability to contribute to the wellbeing and health of others. Throughout college, I have become grounded in illustrating meticulousness. In Microbiology, I learned of various microorganisms and their relationship to public health. This course taught me how to detect, isolate, and measure the growth of bacteria along with preventing and controlling infectious diseases in humans.
Microbiology highlighted the need for organization and precision in obtaining samples of microorganisms. It was imperative for me to display meticulousness throughout the course and ensured my ability to succeed. Nurses especially, also exhibit a conscientious behavior when providing patient care. They seek to remain organized and well coordinated in their tasks to prevent from trailing behind as this can lead to a domino effect and further inhibit the duties of other healthcare providers. Thus, demonstrating such demeanor empowers nurses and myself to accomplish goals.
Currently, my ability to display empathy, diligence, and meticulousness has led me to become a Blood Donor Ambassador for the American Red Cross. As a volunteer, my mission is to greet and assist donors with registering to give blood along with providing support to the collection staff and observing the donation process. The Red Cross ties the importance of meticulousness I acquired from Microbiology into reality. For example, before an individual can donate blood he/she is expected to undergo a health history screening in which the collection staff tests the donor's hemoglobin level to detect the presence of bloodborne pathogens.
Moreover, I plan to study abroad this May in Nicaragua where I will be working in various clinics alongside local physicians and nurses and giving back to the Nicaraguan community. Here, I will apply my learned skills and the program itself will aid in my ability to appreciate cultural diversity and intercultural communication skills within healthcare, two principles that are highly influential in the nursing field. As I compare Nicaraguan healthcare and outstanding environmental issues to those in the United States, I hope to firmly gain insight through a lens different from one I am accustomed to.
