Time under clouds

It's always like this after waking from a deep sleep. Your body half numb from the days spent adrift in the hydra freeze chamber. The muscles move slowly towards remembering their purpose. I washed my face with my tea oil rag and positioned the mirror to monitor its surface. My skin was dry, my eye's were weepy, and as I covered my face with the rag, the memory of why I was here set in. I had never wanted to travel this far out before.

Deep inside, I secretly hated time travel and inter- galactic space flights. I wanted to do something different with my life but my father demanded that I follow in his footsteps, sending me off to one of the top Universities in the Sirius system. The boredom I suffered was unbearable at times. I could care less about the number of dimensions that now facilitated space travel, and consequently, time. Nor did I find the wonders of hydrogen-fuel cell technology particularly absorbing. All of this changed of course, when I met her.

I'd never felt the shivers of the heart fairies strumming until that day. She dropped her digitizer and I instinctually bent down to pick it up. I had not even bothered to notice how beautiful she was until she slowly floated up with me. Her pace was slow and dreamy. Her eyes were as green as the distant emeralds of Gardia, and her hair was golden and curly. We walked together and discovered we were going to the same lecture. That was five months ago, at the start of the current semester. This was now our first time trip together, and I see it as a perfect opportunity to express the feelings I have been keeping bottled inside.

I reached under the shelf and pulled out my travel bag. I had picked the furnishings for my quarters according to one of Earth's more fashionable eras. The catalogues had described my desk as a Louis XV replica. The details of this archaic instrument were ornate and painstakingly labored, down to the gilded, filigree handles.

That was one thing I had enjoyed doing; looking over the various phases of fashion during the famed planet's long history. I grabbed my digital photo collector and walked towards the window. I pulled back the curtains and stood frightened and astonished before my view. The magnetism was overwhelming and I could almost feel the living energy and vibration of its life force. It had always puzzled me how such a violent and tragic culture, could also create some of the most breathtaking and passionate works in the known universe. I stood staring out of the infinite gaze of my window feeling this astonishing impact of self-realization.

I was seeing for the first time that mass of tragedy known throughout every learned culture of the universe. The planet earth has always held a private stigma for me, and the only classes I actually enjoy are the ones where its history showers upon me. Gazing at this relic touches the inner core of my sympathy. I scanned for the image in my viewfinder, and found the picture that has been shopped around for thousands of years: Earth in her prime, with vast regions of white clouds above, and blue water below. This is not the same thing we see today however, the nuclear wars and conquests of greed have altered the landscape dramatically. The clouds now fluttered a darkened purple and the vast, crystal blue waters sunken to squalid puddles, in the glow of a pale moon.

Tomorrow I would be wandering on the planet's surface on a spot chosen by the professor. We cannot fly there of course because of the radiation. An android unit will be sent down to set up the teleportation chamber and our bodies will dematerialize through the fifth dimension. When the process is complete it would have felt like a short nap and we would be standing in a time when the air of earth was breathable. I scanned for her photograph and held up the screen of her image to the window. My eyes marveled at her presence against the backdrop of the moon.

I adjusted my tie and stared at the symbol of the university on my jacket. I heard the door open as the customary green flashes danced upon the room. A small robot came to deliver the gathering instructions for the surface briefing. I stepped out into the hall and walked along the shadows of lights and robots. A distant and sweet laugh slowly echoed towards me. I had that feeling again and I could feel her warmth getting closer as she faintly brushed past me. She turned her head and smiled at me, but only for a brief second.

In fact she might not have even been smiling at me, but laughing in general with her friends as they strolled together to the conference room. They soon vanished from my site until I finally reached the room, cluttered with my classmates who were getting drinks and finding seats. I got some juice and some sort of muffin they used to eat in the time we were traveling too. Along side, the plate was a bowl of berries we would soon be able to pick I walked to an empty row of seats and sat in the middle. I secretly looked for my dear Esteria, but she was nowhere to be found. I panned the audience and spotted Professor Ortom gracefully climbing to the podium.

His hair was still blonde and only little specs of gray stood out. He is not that old to be a Professor thought. I envied his knowledge and charisma, he would be soon addressing all of us at once, and I could not even address one girl. As I opened the holographic learning screen I felt a light vibration move next to me. I looked over and there she was looking dead in my eyes. She waved her fingers at me and said, "Hi!"

I nearly choked on the ancient berry and shyly pronouncing the same, awkward Earth salutation, quickly turned my eyes from hers, down to my screen. The Professor began his lecture and I glanced in her direction. She was staring at her screen with a half smile both mischievous and charming at the same time.

Throughout the Professors' detailed lecture, I could only think of Esteria; his words became a jumbled plethora of colors. She and I made eye contact a few more times and then she reached over to show me something from her screen. I could no longer be expected to care about the lecture! Her glory died off for a quick moment to catch the end of the Professor's speech. "So we will be traveling to a time period in the late nineteenth century, to a country natively known as Germany.

One of the only spots still preserved in the Biosphere regions where no radioactivity dwells. Now we can travel in other dimensions to almost any time period in earth's history, but the radiation is so heavy that it sometimes drifts through the dimensions. There are only thirty-seven areas of Earth's past we are able to explore, and thirty of those are off limits. We chose the most scenic and inspiring of these locations. A place where the ancient philosophers roamed scribbling some of mans great fantasies.

For the first time we are able to pick fruit in it's native land and enjoy the genius of our ancestors. There will be no people around because of the recent banning of cyborg clones in off world colonies. There are however plenty of safely cloned animals and I hear the birds of that era sang sweeter than your much admired Tia la Tia." The Professor laughed at the belated joke as the crowd moaned and mocked him. Tia la Tia of course was Sirius's biggest star of the moment. All the men wanted her and all the girls wanted to be her. Even I admit that I have downloaded a few of her videos to my memory brain drive. As the Professor answered a few questions I half-raised my hand to ask one. I avoided calling attention to myself at all cost, sometimes relegating answers to my own research, but this was different. I doubt that I would ever see Earth again after this trip, and I just had to know: "What happened here?"

"I am glad you asked that question. They do not like us to talk too much about the final years of Earth but since we are here, I would love to explain them. As you know a distant relative of our species originally inhabited Earth, as well as various other solar systems. Through time, all of their creations would be destroyed by the greed of their rulers. When the serpent breeds from the constellation of Draco finally came, they easily shifted into controlling the wealth of its resources. They destroyed the Earth in countless wars and after amassing all of the natural fuel, water and stones they moved on to the next planet; leaving a barren and uninhabitable Earth behind.

Earth has been sort of the testing experiment for the universe. Every alien or humanoid breed in the galaxy is weary of its blueprint, any more questions? Then be ready and suited because we begin teleportation in two hours."

The Professor finished his lecture and the nervous euphoria of the crowd heightened. Esteria looked over to me and gently circled my arm with her jeweled fingers. "Aren't you excited?" She playfully squeezed my arm then jumped up to meet her friends in the isle. They glided over to greet the Professor and I twitched as Esteria grabbed the hand of the Professor leading him down the stairs. He smiled and inched closer to her as walked off the last step.

I watched his body brush against hers as he thanked her, continuing to charm Esteria and her friends with details and conversation about our forthcoming exploration. I watched him closely as he smiled and parlayed his knowledge and experience on her naïve, young heart. I tried to walk out but the scene glued me to the spot as I watched the old man's moves. He was flirting with her I am sure, and to make things worse she was flirting back harder!

The pit of my stomach was so curled; I could not stand any more so I began to turn and head for the door. The icy cold drench of liquid soaked my shirt and the stained cream sat dangling toward the floor. My suit was a mess and the paranoid embarrassment quickly rushed in. I heard laughs and looked up to see whom I had run into. To my disdain, it is none other than the Raider Ball team captain Jakes "The Jackhammer". Not only was he a three time All Galaxy athletic super hero, but also the most popular and best looking guy at the University. I had to wonder what he was doing here because he wasn't in our class. "Watch where you're going, douche! Bag!" He busted out laughing as he the pronounced the last two words.

Words I had never heard before. "Good one." He was complimented by another member of the Raider Ball team, and slowly but surely the rest of the team began to fall in behind. Jakes held up a book to my face and began to flutter through the pages. "Famous Earth phrases of the twenty first century." He smiled as he stuffed the book into my jacket pocket half lined with smeared cream and berries. He continued walking past me with the team in tow. I turned my head, and watched them stride toward the Professor. I was astonished at the incongruent presence of Jakes aboard this voyage. I felt a large hand on my shoulder it was the team coach coming to offer me some words of advice. "Sorry about that son. It's the teams' first visit to Earth and they are excited."

"But they aren't even in the class." I had replied, while turning and walking back with the Coach in the direction that Jakes and the team had taken. "Well son these are the benefits of being popular and of value to higher learning establishments. You nerds get to use the best science laboratories in the Universe and all because we win ball games. The more we win the more private sponsorships we get. So naturally, when a trip to Earth comes along... so do we. The only down side is that the cheerleaders couldn't make it. The boys have been complaining about the scags with all brains and no tits! Except for Jakes, he seems to have found a nice little cute piece of pie. What do you know! I think he is going for it right now. Look over there!" As I followed the bent shape of his finger, I already knew what to expect.

I was correct. My vision rubbed raw the pain of inadequacy, and the image became clearer: Jakes was showing off his muscles, his streaming white straight teeth, and just about all he could cram into his expanded chest cavity, to sweet, giddy Esteria.

She seemed to be enjoying the performance as I noticed her nipples slowly poking from beneath the fabric of her thin tunic dress. She squeezed his sculpted arm with those lovely, ringed fingers while bringing her face close to his neck, smelling the vulgar scent he had drenched himself in. I turned around in disgust and walked out of the room. I left the sounds of laughter behind and followed the dancing lights of the halls back to my chambers.

Two hours later, after the nucleic Scanning proofs were reviewed and we were given a vote of approval; we assembled to watch the androids dispatch the teleportation chamber. We looked out through a stretched window that was at least the size of two Raider Ball fields. The Earth shone more radiantly than ever before. The planet seemed to radiate in spectacular brightness. For the first time, I could see lightning flash abundantly throughout the purple waves of gases in the sky. We watched the tiny chamber zip in a flash through the sky and vanish in Earth's atmosphere.

The Radiation Belt surrounding the outer rim of Earth will not affect the droids inside the pod. We each popped a small, gummy like capsule in our mouths and stood in the designated decoding spaces; our eyes fixed on the view displayed in front of us. The timing device began a countdown and a computer programmed voice instructed us to remain still. The platform beneath my feet was vibrating at such high variations that the only physical sensation was that of slight tingling racing up my legs. I then felt the familiar droning sound that came from the platform above and soon the waves that were penetrating my head, made the pill in my mouth dissolve, instantaneously turning to liquid and spreading quickly through my body.

The blurs became less frequent and my sight cleared as I wandered along. My body felt heavy and I could almost detect every aspect of my mechanical wiring weighing down upon me. Then knowledge of where I was came rushing in a sudden hush as I wondered if I may not have been unfit for this atmosphere. I felt I was suffocating. The medic droid came rushing up to me and scanned me with some sort of metal looking object.

A blue laser emitted off it and it searched over the whole of my body. A loud beep sounded and the droid moved on to the next member of the class, also wandering aimlessly in the same area. My heart slowed to its normal pace and I took a deep breath of fresh air. It filled me like no other breath I have had before. I rubbed my eyes and tried to clear my vision without much success and the stinging sensation made them water. Blinking, I began to take in the view. I was astounded. The skies were hiding blue behind exotically shaped white clouds.

The sun too hides behind these clouds, and specs of gray were scattered along the never-ending sky. In the distance over the river and perched on the hill was a bashed old castle. Its color was a faded rustic brown, and the ravages of the past left it misshapen and hard to imagine its former glory. The forest above it was windy and curvy, and one could just see the ancient army storming through trees to get to the spoils of the castle of Heidelberg. What a lovely name I thought that was for a city, and as I wondered what it meant I panned the entire landscape. During my observation, I was tackled by one of the Raider Ball team members. "Whoa! Love the gravity here!" He rushed past me and proceeded to tackle the other student that I had seen earlier. He rushed off to be congratulated by his teammates.

I slowly picked my self up off the ground as I heard her voice tremble from behind. "Those guys are such assholes." I turned around and brushed myself off as coolly as I could, trying to figure out what she had just said. "What?" "Here." She showed me the book of 'Earth phrases' and pointed it out along with its various meanings. "So did you get this book from Jakes?" "How did you know?" I held up my copy and we laughed together. "Jakes is so sweet he is not like the rest of those guys." "So Jakes is not an asshole." "Absolutely not he is charming, funny and beneath all the muscles a real sensitive guy.

He is going to take me to the monastery on top of the hill to hear the birds sing." "You two are going alone?" "Yes, unless you know someone else who can walk up that far." "No, well I don't know maybe. What does the book say." "It says look for yourself." These words came instantly and from none other than mister Universe himself. Jakes grabbed Esteria by the arm and she lit up with excitement instantly. "Come on princess let's get to the top of the hill, because there is something I want to show you." She waved good bye as she chased him up the path into the forest. They vanished into the trees, and as I watched alone I knew that I would soon vanish with them.

The burning continued in my legs as I walked further up the mountain. Following eroded stones with the word thingstatte chiseled on it. The book said as long as I was walking uphill that I would eventually get there. I stopped to take a rest and suck in all the majesty of this mountain. The little town began to shrink in the distance through the checkered emeralds of the forest. The birds swirled through the air and sang new melodies to the wind.

Seeing all this inspired me to move faster and get to the top where its treasures lay. This Thingstatte apparently was a theater for speeches; it was built by one of Earth history's Anti-Christ's so called. The area is reputed to be haunted and was an ancient home for various occult and magic ceremonies. Interesting stuff indeed, I can see why Esteria would want to visit, but I am sure Jakes has other ideas.

After more climbing than I had ever done, I finally seen a sign of civilization. Sticking out of a crumbled range of treetops was an old stone watchtower. I ran and clawed my way through the stones and branches to get to the tower. Suddenly I came sprinting out of the forest, and ran straight into an unseen stump. I went flying. I tumbled a few times and rolled, but only suffered minor scratches. I let out a hearty laugh and stood up proudly knowing that I finally was at the top.

I walked over to the watchtower and looked off the edge of the cliff. It was such a devastating spectacle that I had to pull out my digitizer. I took out the plug to my memory brain hard drive located in the back of my head. Plugged in my digitizer and adjusted my eye's to snap a picture. The picture was downloaded from my vision then stored in the digitizer. I unplugged and scanned through the digitizer to view the photo. It had such amazing quality, capturing the view exactly as my eye had seen it. I quickly bored with this view and rushed to find the theater. My limp wore out fast and I spotted the steps covered with thick sheets of grass.

This was the haunted theater and as I ran to the center, it was not hard to see why. It felt like a sphere of slowly elevating steps surrounded you. Covered with a disgusting shade of green I began to run up these steps squashing the trampled grass. I reached the top and stared down. I now had a view of the podium and got instant chills as I had a vision of clairvoyance. A man with a short mustache once haunted this place; maybe he was the one in the book. I glanced around, found some more signs, and got closer for inspection. They pointed the way to the monastery and as I looked up, I saw the stone steps leading the way.

I quickly dashed up the steps and greeted the crumbled ruins of the most ancient structure I had ever seen. It shared the same rotted brown the castle across the river shared. The walls were barely standing, sticking out of the ground just enough to be seen. Sparkling white patches of snow that had yet to melt greeted me before their disintegrating. Its tower remained upright and intact and I climbed its stairs and stared out, and somewhere between the cries of the wind and the songs of the birds I heard her voice. I quickly ran down the stairs and followed her laughs. Through a crumbled old stone window, I saw her sitting with Jakes. I hid back and kept quiet. I was certain no one else had made it this far up and only the birds were friendly with this place.

I jealousy watched Jakes put the moves on Esteria and my confidence of ever loving someone as special as her dwindled fast. He turned to kiss her and I turned around to walk off. I slowly dragged my weary feet back down the steps and sat plopping down on the damp stone stones of the ancient theater.

I sat on the steps and combed through the book Jakes had given me. Maybe there was some sort of hidden meeting to it all. The clouds above me started to roll with intensity shifting more grays by the second. I came across an interesting list of musicians and thought that it might be nice to listen to one of the songs from this period. Moreover, since the university uploads a comprehensive language chip I will be able to understand every word of it. I scanned the list but it was too long so I closed my eyes and decided to hear whatever song my scanned stopped at. I opened my eyes and read what song fate had intended me to hear. "Instant karma." I typed it in to the search finder in my digitizer and after a couple of minutes it appeared. The song began to play and instantly it hooked me.

As the intensity of his words began to sketch their impact on my soul, something wonderful happened. The clouds suddenly departed and I was soaking in the brilliance of the sun. It was as if the sunshine was strictly for me, a sort of thumbs up sign from the all knowing and powerful force we call God. As the lyrics continued to inspire and the sun continued to shine, I had the biggest smile ever to stretch across my face. As the song faded out so did the sun, the clouds again covering the burning light of fury. I heard a commotion in the background and turned to watch Jakes scramble down the hill alone. He apparently was shouting more of Earth's phrases and judging by his tone that they probably were not pleasant.

I ignored this and sat there alone staring at the rows of trampled grass. Again her voice called to me and she came running down the steps to my side. She rushed up to me and threw her self next to me sitting on the steps. She had tears in her eyes and gave me a surprisingly large hug. "You were right Jakes is an asshole! Oh I am so glad to see you." Being totally shocked and caught off guard I pulled out a tissue and wiped her tears away. "What happened?" "He tried to make it with me, trying to kiss and rub all over me, and I kept refusing." "Did he tell you he is a three time All Galaxy intergalactic super jock?" "Yes those were the only words it seemed he knew how to say. I never knew that you were so funny." "Did you ever know that I like you." "What?" "It's true, you do something to me inside that makes me feel like, throwing up." "Throwing up!" "No! I mean in a good way. This is why I can't talk to you. I don't know how to."

Luckily, a massive downpour of rain, which halted my speech, saved me. "Come on." I grabbed her hand and led her to the shelter of the ancient podium. It was slow motion as we ran together in the rain and I could barely keep my eyes off her as the rain splashed off her dangling curls. The raindrops reflected brilliantly in the spaces of her yellow greenish eyes. We ran up the steps of the podium, to the sheltering of the roof. Its massive stage gave us both chills and we sat down together at its edge so our legs could hang off relaxed. We watched the rain pour down and chatted about all of the mysteries and miracles of the cosmos. I finally was able to express myself without any fear or hesitation. Before the androids arrived to fly us back down the mountain, I had a moment that could have only happened to someone in the far realms of space. For the one I hoped would love me. Esteria kissed me, in time under clouds on planet Earth.
