1984 is applicable today because, just as in the book, freedom isn't free, it is a true burden. Why I have come to this conclusion is because when reading the book, the first chapter (page 13) states, '(nothing was illegal, since there were no longer any laws), but if detected it was reasonably certain that it would be punished by death, or at least by twenty-five years in a forced-labor camp.' Now, in terms of buying and reading this book, I believe that this is a must read. Things that are said and done in this book are happening nowadays. Though not as harsh as to kill someone for having a journal to write down thoughts. Today, we have seen the government warp facts into fiction. Telling us what they want us to believe so the government can take control. A quote from the book says.

'When memory failed and written records were falsified... the claim of the Party to have improved the conditions of human life had got to be accepted, because there did not exist, and never again could exist, any standard which it could be tested.' This quote is explaining to us that, in the book, the Party had control over what was acknowledged. They sought out records, journals, and notes from the past and changed what they did not like. They turned these things into alternative facts, then broadcasted them on tv. Today, you can see the same things happening. For example, Arizona Democrat Kyrsten Sinema said it is okay for Americans to join the terrorist. This did not happen, though it was the headline on news.

She simply made an offhand comment when a radio interviewer in 2003 asked a hypothetical question about a personal decision about fighting for the Taliban. Lastly, a quote that sums up all of the fancy words from the book such as; thoughtcrime, doublethink, belly feel, and duckspeak. 'Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of that? In the end, we shall make throughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.' The major theme from 1984 is shrinking the English language down to limit independent thoughts. Notice in some of Trump's talks he says words such as 'biggly.' This isn't even a word, to begin with. He is a wise man but too many slip-ups like this could cause too many disturbances. And the government is dropping bombs everywhere.
