Writing essays isn’t the most exciting activity or hobby. A few students would decide to do this just for fun. But whether we are at school, university, writing essay is inevitable. So, you have two choices: either to “suffer” any time you get the assignments or to find out how to write great essay and turn this activity into real entertainment.
Tip 1 Find your inspiration time
Each person is unique, and the time when your creative mind is ready to show the whole spectrum of talents as an author is individual for everyone. It sometimes depends on your sleeping time: if you are an “owl,” try writing something in the evening; if you are a “morning bird,” wake up early and grasp inspiration with the sunrise. Your physiological inclination plays a vital role in your ability to think creatively. Pay attention to your mood; famous artists claim that being upset helps them to create masterpiece. Observe yourself being in different moods, and find out which one is the most conducive to writing compositions.
Tip 2 Don’t write essay in one day
Unless the deadline is tomorrow, you can devote some time to contemplating about the topic. Whenever you have free time, think about the theme which is provided for the assignment. You can make short notes on everything you consider relevant. You will see that even 1-2 days spent thinking about the theme will allow you to perceive the significance of the topic and write about it more painstakingly.
Tip 3 Brainstorm ideas
If you don’t have lots of time to contemplate on the topic, try brainstorming technique. You can even ask someone to do this with you. Take a notebook, tell everyone the theme, and write down everything that springs up to mind. Don’t waste time on considering whether the idea is relevant or unreal, because while brainstorming, all ideas should be written down. This activity is very productive, and it takes only 3-5 minutes. You will be surprised how interesting the ideas can be if they are boosted in such a way. This method can be used before doing in-depth research when your mind is not bigoted with somebody’s viewpoints.
Tip 4 Learn about the Essay Type
There are lots of various writing tasks which have different features. Before you start, google the necessary information about the essay type and read samples. Find out how long is an essay, which style of language can be used, the aim of the paper, the necessity of research, bibliography, and other significant specifications. This step won’t take lots of time, but you will be sure which particular features the necessary type requires.
Tip 5 Prepare thesis and outline
Whether it is academic or creative writing, the core aim is the same: to convey exact message to readers. If you decide on the precise thesis before you begin writing the whole paper, your essay will be well-structured better, and you will use relevant examples which prove the thesis. The good idea is to prepare an outline. A properly organized plan will make your paper coherent and logical. It’s true that many students omit this step, but try not to. With a structured and well-organized essay plan, you will make your content “revolve around” the main idea. Doing this, you will reach higher level of understanding with readers.
Tip 6 Use new vocabulary
Don’t add lots of clichés; it will make the composition sound artificial, impersonal. Discover new horizons of language, use various adjectives, metaphors, similes, symbols (if the required type of writing allows this). Don’t be afraid of experiments with the language; you can even try creating your stylistic neologisms. Who knows, maybe, you are the next William Shakespeare?
Tip 7 Think outside the box
Try to put yourself in the teacher’s shoes: lots of students have similar topics because the task description is connected to exact sphere. Of course, the papers will be somehow alike if the topic is identical for the whole group. But even in such a situation you can make the content not typical. You won’t have lots of desire to read about the same examples which have been already used many times in articles or said by experts. That’s why, you need to write something authentic, unusual or extraordinary. If the teacher remembers your works for its unique content, ideas, or instances, it will be appreciated with a high mark.
Tip 8 Be specific
It is not good if the writer describes abstract notions all the time. The readers will get bored very quickly. If the introduction is supposed to include background information, the body paragraphs should contain concrete ideas. You can start with a general topic sentence which raises up particular theme, and then you can develop it into giving more specific details. Each new sentence should be more exact:
I like beautiful landscapes. My favorite view which I have ever seen was at sea. I remember how the sea changed into the blue-grey wall of water allowing the flamboyant sunset to turn into the most eye-catching part of the scenery.
In this example, the author starts with abstract information and in the following sentences clarifies his abstract thoughts so that the reader sees an accurate picture. Try to do the same with your composition. You’ll how easier it will become for you to specify your thoughts.
Tip 9 Brush up your grammar
It is a meticulous task but a compulsory one. Fortunately for our generation, there are different websites which can help students with proofreading papers. You can try using Grammarly which is free for limited functions. You can check the punctuation, stylistics, grammar of your paper there. But don’t rely on such services fully, even computers make mistakes. Read the essay as if you are an actor on the stage: it is the most efficient way to find stylistic mistakes, and improve the rhythmical pattern. You can even ask someone to read your paper, they will tell you possible ways of improving the work. A fresh view is always a good idea.
Tip 10 Give yourself a reward
It’s not advice for improving writing, but it is useful for self-motivation. Writing is always about being creative, and if you make this process tedious and unrewarding, there is likelihood that you won’t do similar task better in the nearest future. Our mind is focused on achievements. If you praise yourself even with a cookie, your mind subconsciously perceives the next written assignment as something worth doing.
These tips will help you in organizing work better, boosting creativity, and improving your writing skills in a long run.
