What Happens to a Dream Deferred: Exploring the Impact of Personal Desires

A "Dream Differed", by poet Langston Hughes, discusses the matter of personal desires being put on hold and the impact it holds. This poem, in many ways relates to the many forgotten and broken dreams in the personal lives of many. Hughes speaks to the mind of a young dreamer who is forced to either move on or grow up from their childish ways. A young dreamer, such as myself, who has experienced a dream differed. Now on the pursuit of a new career path my desires of overcoming the culinary world have been put aside. While the impact has taken full effect and causing more than needed.

It was love at first sight when it came to food and I. The invigorating smell and overwhelming taste amazed my senses. Food had its way when it came to exciting the heart of a young soul. It was the first and only passion when it came to goals and ambitions.

Dreams of culinary school, while traveling the world experiencing different cultures. However society had much different plans at hand for the young one. With increasing expenses the success rate slowly decreasing, becoming a chef no longer looked forth fight for my future. With U.S. News not including culinary as one of the top one hundred best jobs in America, and a sudden interest in the world of science, a career change was soon to come (The 100 Best Jobs,1). As they so claim, "some are simply better than the rest"", places a young soul in a position of now choosing what is overall best for the near future (The 100 Best Jobs p1). Soon the culinary world becomes nothing more than what it already is, a dream.

A new dream arrives, and soon the pursuit of becoming a biochemist is fast on its way. The culinary still remains a dream drifting in the background, slow dissipating into a small hobby. Every now and then I would occasionally indulge in the presence of food, aspiring new creations. However the focus of the new dream made its newly claimed place of culinary presence. It makes one wonder like Hughes says, "Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?" (Hughes, 2-3). The dream that I so effortlessly chased for majority of time has begun to slowly fade away into existence. The passion that was once so longed for has now become a memory frozen in time, or as Hughes writes, "crust and sugar over-like a syrupy sweet?" (Hughes, 7-8). Soon the memory would begin to take its toll, impacting life as I am forced to mature.

Being nothing more than a memory for me to look back apron, this dream would soon start to weigh on my shoulders. The dream would linger away at the back of my mind, knowing that it no longer had its place in the near future. I believe Hughes described the dream best when he wrote, "Maybe it just sags like a heavy load" (Hughes, 9-10). The dream now 'differed', would cause a void filled with regret to form where my passion once existed. There was no motivation left to strive for the new dream, or passion to chase after something of no desire. Scott T. Rabideau, of Rochester institute of technology writes that, "motivation is the basic drive for all of our actions", and there was no motivation for me to desire biochemistry as my life long career (Rabideaun, p2). It began to dawn that I was not satisfied with the direction in which I was leading my life. It was clear that a must needed change awaited and was soon on its way. That it is when it was realized that one must enjoy the profession they work in to achieve success.

Realizing that it was time to return the memory back to its rightful place as a dream has made a major impact on my life for the better. A dream that was once differed, had once again risen as a dream in full effect. Jiving personal desires put aside to satisfy the aspects of society really helped to re-focus my life. Putting a dream on hold well only hold a person back from accomplishing and obtaining their full potential. It is essential that a dream remains from becoming differed and instead thrives in its entirety.
