Saint Therese was born the youngest out of nine in her family. Her feast day is October 1st in Lisieux, France. Saint Therese's mother died of breast cancer when she was just 4 years of age and breast cancer also take her sister who was only sixteen. Then at age 14, Saint Therese had a miracle on Christmas of 1886. In France there was a tradition where young kids would leave their shoes by the hearth on Christmas and their parents would fill the shoes with gifts but by the age of 14 most of the kids would outgrow the tradition and stop as for Therese her sister didn’t want Therese to grow up so she kept the tradition going and kept putting the gifts in the shoe for Therese. However, that one day as Therese and her sister Celine were climbing the stairs and getting ready to put up their hats they overheard their father exclaiming how he was finally relieved that he would not have to continue the gift-giving tradition anymore next year as he stood by the shoes.

As Celine and Therese heard this, Celine looked over to her sister Therese and expected her sister to either teardown and cry but miraculously Jesus had come in her heart and made her feel her father’s feelings instead of hers which made her swallow her tears back. Therese had referred to this miracle on Christmas her experience of “conversion”.Because Therese was enlightened by flowers she often gave the Lord glory and praises with her. Another of the miracles that Therese had encountered was the statue of ‘“Our Lady of the Smile”’. Soon after Therese’s sister Pauline who acted as a teacher and second mother to Therese left to go to the “covenant at the Carmelite Monastery in Lisieux”.

Therese became very ill following that winter. Doctors diagnosing could not seem to point at one direction toward a certain disease and in the contrary could not treat her disease at the same time but according to Therese, she claimed that it was the devil’s work. She would suffer from hallucinations and symptoms like insomnia and headaches. An example from her hallucination would object such as the nails in her room would shapeshift into scary dark looking fingers and once when her father was visiting her by her bedside she experiences the hallucination again and she witnesses how her father’s hat turned into a horrendous shape which provokes fear to her and at the same time sadness from her father who misunderstood.

In the end, Therese could no longer take this suffering and prayed upon the Mary statue right by her bedside and miraculously she recovered from her sickness. When Therese was not at the age of 15 she had the ambition to devote her life to Christ. Because she was devoted she came upon Carmelite authorities asking for permission to enter the covenant but in return was refused by the priest there due to her age. Even though Therese was refused she was persistent in her choice and went to the bishop for permission to enter the covenant.

The day when Therese and her dad Louis went to see the Bishop it was first off rainy but the Bishop was very surprised by how ambitious Therese was to enter the covenant by just how simple but determined she was when she put her hair up just to make her look older and along with how supporting her father Louis was to Therese’s decision and also how Louis fully ready he was to give his youngest daughter to the Jesus Christ the Lord. Although the Bishop saw through how Therese really desired to be in the covenant and was pretty convinced he did not give her the permission to enter the covenant and wanted to reconsider. After Therese failure to get permission from Bishop, Therese decided to travel with her family who were her two sisters and father to try to get permission from the Pope
